Federal prosecutors have announced charges against four individuals accused of violent actions during the ongoing protests in Los Angeles and Santa Ana that stemmed from opposition to federal immigration enforcement operations, as reported by The Western Journal.

According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, two men—Emiliano Garduno Galvez, 23, and Wrackkie Quiogue, 27—have been charged with possessing destructive devices, specifically Molotov cocktails, during riots in downtown Los Angeles and Paramount.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents apprehend an undocumented migrant they were surveilling in Herndon, Va., Jan. 15, 2025.

Galvez and Quiogue are both in custody and face federal criminal complaints. If convicted, they each face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

“When protesting crosses the line into violence, the penalties will be severe,” U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli said in a statement.

“Possessing a Molotov cocktail or another destructive device is punishable by up to 10 years in federal prison. The vile attacks such as the ones alleged in these complaints could have resulted in life-altering or life-ending injuries to police officers, sheriff’s deputies, and innocent bystanders.”

Essayli added, “We will not relent in dispensing swift justice to criminals who take advantage of our country’s freedoms to engage in lawlessness.”

The arrests stem from incidents during protests that escalated into violent confrontations with law enforcement. According to a report from KNBC-TV, Galvez allegedly lit and threw a Molotov cocktail over a wall while officers attempted to disperse a crowd.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the device injured anyone.

Quiogue was apprehended near a federal building while allegedly in possession of an unlit Molotov cocktail and a lighter. Officials say he attempted to flee the scene and discarded the device during his escape.

In addition to the charges against Galvez and Quiogue, federal authorities announced that two more individuals—Christian Andres Garcia, 32, and Rene Luna, 43—were also charged in connection with protest-related violence.

Both men face misdemeanor counts of assaulting a federal officer during demonstrations in Santa Ana. If convicted, each could receive up to one year in federal prison.

Quiogue appeared in court on Tuesday. Galvez, Garcia, and Luna are scheduled to appear in the coming days, according to the Department of Justice.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office emphasized that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Trump administration has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting criminal activity related to unrest, particularly incidents involving violence against federal officers.
