Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) publicly criticized his own party on Monday for what he called a failure to strongly denounce the ongoing violence in Los Angeles tied to federal immigration enforcement.
As unrest entered its fourth consecutive day, Fetterman took to social media to express concern over the violent nature of the demonstrations and the lack of clear condemnation from Democratic leaders.
“I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that,” Fetterman posted on X.
“This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement.”

Fetterman’s message included an image from the weekend’s riots showing vehicles engulfed in flames and a masked individual waving a Mexican flag while standing on a burned-out car.

The unrest began on Friday in Los Angeles when federal immigration agents conducting operations were met with resistance from demonstrators.
Over the weekend, the protests escalated into widespread riots that included vandalism, arson, and attacks on federal officers.
The violence prompted President Donald Trump to authorize the deployment of National Guard forces to support law enforcement in securing federal property and personnel.
Despite the timeline showing that violence had already broken out before the National Guard was activated, several Democratic officials placed blame on the federal response.
California Governor Gavin Newsom claimed that President Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard was both “unconstitutional” and the cause of the unrest.
“Donald Trump has created the conditions you see on your TV tonight. He’s exacerbated the conditions. He’s… lit the proverbial match,” Newsom said during an interview on MSNBC.

“He’s putting fuel on this fire ever since he announced he was taking over the National Guard in an illegal act, in an amoral act, an unconstitutional act, and we’re going to test that theory with a lawsuit tomorrow.”
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also criticized the federal presence and supported Newsom’s position, echoing concerns about the legality of the deployment.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Police Department released a statement late Saturday describing the city’s demonstrations as having “remained peaceful.”
The department went on to commend individuals who “exercised their First Amendment rights responsibly” and claimed the day had “concluded without incident.”

Independent journalist Anthony Cabassa pushed back against these statements, posting video footage showing rioters throwing projectiles at federal agents.
“There is a lot of misinformation being put out by local and state Government here in California,” Cabassa posted on X.
“The escalation and violence was not a result of National Guard deployed, the violence was already here on Friday June 6th, a whole day before.”

Federal authorities confirmed that several incidents of violence occurred before any National Guard personnel were present.
Agents operating in the fashion district were targeted by rioters with rocks, leading to injuries and property damage.
Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Saturday evening that one individual involved in the assault on federal agents had been identified.
That suspect is now on the FBI’s most wanted list, and federal law enforcement agencies are continuing their efforts to locate and arrest additional individuals involved in the weekend’s attacks.
As the situation in Los Angeles remains volatile, Senator Fetterman’s remarks mark one of the few breaks within Democratic leadership on the issue of how the riots and federal immigration operations are being handled.
National Guard and federal law enforcement personnel continue to operate in the city, with no indication of a drawdown in operations.
