A devastating fire at an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has left nine people dead and dozens more hospitalized, according to state and local officials.
The fire broke out at the Gabriel House assisted living facility late Sunday night, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services confirmed that first responders were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Sunday, July 13.

When firefighters arrived at the facility, located in southeastern Massachusetts, they were met with heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the building.
Crews immediately began efforts to rescue trapped residents and suppress the fire.
Authorities said that some residents were seen hanging out of windows, screaming for help as the building burned.
“Upon arrival, they found the front of the building engulfed by flames and heavy smoke and immediately made entry to begin rescuing residents while working to suppress the fire,” officials stated.

Roughly 50 firefighters responded to the blaze, which escalated to a five-alarm fire.
The operation continued through the night and into Monday morning before the fire was fully brought under control.
Multiple residents were pronounced dead at the scene, and over 30 people were taken to area hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical. As of Monday, one person remains in critical condition, and five firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries while responding to the emergency.
In total, approximately 70 residents were housed at Gabriel House at the time of the incident. Emergency personnel were able to evacuate many of them, but the full extent of injuries and fatalities is still being assessed as the investigation continues.
“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said in a statement Monday. “On behalf of the Fall River Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones who are grieving this morning.”
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined and remains under active investigation by local and state fire authorities. Officials have not released the identities of the deceased as families are being notified.
Gabriel House is a residential facility for seniors and individuals who require assistance with daily living. It is not yet clear whether the facility was equipped with functional fire suppression or alarm systems, or how the fire initially spread.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services and Fall River Fire Department are expected to release further updates as more information becomes available.
As of Monday afternoon, the facility remains closed, and survivors are being assisted by emergency response teams and local support services.
