A Florida sheriff’s deputy gave a convicted felon a crash course in the laws of motion during a late-night patrol in Palm Coast, just south of St. Augustine, as reported by The Blaze.
What began as a routine stop turned into a dramatic chase that ended with the suspect learning an unforgettable physics lesson, all to the ironic backdrop of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” playing on the deputy’s radio.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office reported that Deputy Murphy spotted 38-year-old Michael McDermott standing beside a bicycle on Pine Lakes Parkway late Saturday night.

McDermott, already well-acquainted with the county jail system, seemed suspicious. When the deputy approached and activated his emergency lights, McDermott initially appeared to comply. However, his brief cooperation dissolved as he hopped on his bike and pedaled away down Westminster Drive.
The situation escalated when McDermott, a convicted felon, pulled a 9mm Ruger from his waistband while fleeing. Recognizing the imminent threat, Deputy Murphy acted decisively, using his patrol vehicle to strike McDermott, ejecting him from the bicycle.

The deputy quickly handcuffed the suspect with backup assistance, neutralizing the danger before it could spiral further.
The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office confirmed McDermott’s long history of arrests dating back to 2013. Most recently, he had been released from jail on December 17 after serving 90 days for fentanyl possession. At the time of the incident, he was carrying a holstered firearm—a clear violation for a convicted felon.
McDermott now faces a laundry list of charges, including assault or battery on a law enforcement officer, fleeing and eluding, resisting with violence, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly commended Deputy Murphy’s fast actions in diffusing a potentially deadly confrontation.
“The job that a deputy sheriff does to proactively protect our community is a dangerous one, and deputies must often make split-second decisions,” Staly remarked.
“In this instance, Deputy Murphy was forced to make a split-second decision in a dangerous encounter with an armed felon. This incident could have taken a deadly turn, and I am thankful that the situation was quickly resolved before that became a reality.”
While the incident was intense, the sheriff’s office couldn’t ignore a moment of levity: Cyndi Lauper’s hit “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” provided an ironic soundtrack as events unfolded.
McDermott was treated for a minor ankle injury before being booked into the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he likely won’t find the kind of fun Lauper sings about.
