A man shot an intruder inside his mother’s home during an alleged burglary on Friday evening, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the scene around 8:30 p.m. on Friday after receiving a call about a residential burglary in progress at a residence off Deer Run Road.

Upon arrival, deputies found a man holding another man at gunpoint inside the home.

According to the sheriff’s office, the resident told deputies that he had arrived at his mother’s house and noticed the rear door was open.

Upon entering the home, he reported hearing strange noises coming from the back bedroom, prompting him to retrieve a firearm.

The man stated that he called out to determine if anyone was inside the house.

At that point, an adult male, later identified as Mitchell Platt, allegedly emerged from a hallway and charged at him.

The resident fired one round from his revolver, striking Platt in the leg.

He then held Platt at gunpoint until deputies arrived at the scene.

Emergency responders transported Platt, 37, to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

After receiving medical treatment, Platt was released into the custody of law enforcement.

Investigators reported locating burglary tools near the area where Platt was found inside the residence.

The sheriff’s office confirmed that Platt was arrested and charged with Burglary and Possession of Burglary Tools.

He was later booked into the Osceola County Jail.

No injuries were reported by the resident, and no other individuals were believed to be involved in the incident.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the case.

Officials have asked anyone with additional information to contact the department’s non-emergency line at (407) 348-2222.

As of Saturday afternoon, no additional updates have been provided regarding whether Platt may face further charges or if the State Attorney’s Office will be involved in reviewing the circumstances surrounding the use of force.

This case is one of several recent self-defense shootings in Florida involving alleged home intrusions.

Under Florida law, residents are permitted to use deadly force if they reasonably believe it is necessary to prevent a forcible felony such as burglary or assault within a dwelling.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office has not announced any charges against the resident and has not released his identity.
