A Florida man has been indicted in New Jersey after he was found traveling on an Amtrak train with a cache of weapons, including multiple assault-style firearms, large-capacity magazines, silencers, and a modified rifle that discharged during a search.

According to a statement from New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s office on Tuesday, 34-year-old Jeffrey O. Kennerk of Fort Lauderdale was intercepted on January 3 at the Trenton Transit Center.

Authorities say Kennerk boarded an Amtrak train in Newark, New Jersey, after briefly abandoning a suitcase filled with firearms and ammunition at Newark Penn Station.

“This defendant allegedly hauled a small arsenal of deadly weapons and ammunition through busy transit stations, and on a train filled with passengers,” Platkin said.

“He allegedly left a suitcase containing assorted weapons and ammunition – including an assault rifle – in the concourse of Newark Penn Station, where anyone could have been harmed by them. If not for the outstanding police work done in this matter, we can only imagine where this defendant and these weapons would have ended up.”

The investigation began when a New Jersey Transit Police officer noticed an unaccompanied zebra-print suitcase near the entrance of the Newark subway.

Inside the bag, law enforcement discovered a loaded handgun equipped with an 18-round magazine.

They also found an AR-style magazine loaded with .223 caliber ammunition, along with a plastic bag containing two boxes of 9mm ammunition and four boxes of .223 rounds.

Authorities say a second compartment in the suitcase revealed a loaded Zastava Arms AK-47-style rifle and several additional fully loaded magazines.

Kennerk allegedly stepped away from the bag to buy a ticket to Virginia and boarded the train in Newark.

Law enforcement, already alerted, intercepted him at the next stop in Trenton.

Upon arresting Kennerk, officers found more weapons and ammunition in his possession.

According to the AG’s office, these included an AR-15-style rifle with the upper and lower receivers separated, several handguns, multiple extended magazines, and additional caches of ammunition.

A separate rifle loaded with .300 AAC Blackout ammunition was also recovered.

Authorities stated that one of the rifles appeared to be booby-trapped.

When an officer attempted to make the firearm safe by removing a handkerchief from the suitcase where it was stored, the weapon discharged despite the officer not pulling the trigger.

Investigators say this suggests the firearm had been rigged to fire without normal handling.

In addition, four silencers were found, along with hollow point ammunition in both 9mm and .22 long rifle calibers.

On April 16, a grand jury indicted Kennerk on multiple charges, including second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, four counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, three counts of unlawful possession of an assault firearm, one count of aggravated assault, and one count of certain persons not to have weapons.

He also faces several fourth-degree charges, which include two counts of unlawful possession of a large-capacity ammunition magazine, and one count each of unlawful possession of hollow nose ammunition, unlawful possession of a silencer, endangering another person, and causing or risking widespread injury or damage.

Kennerk remains in custody as the case proceeds through the New Jersey court system.
