A Florida man shot and killed his wife and wounded his stepdaughter before taking his own life following a domestic dispute over an NFL game, authorities said, as reported by The New York Post.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd detailed the sequence of events during a press conference, identifying the suspect as Jason Kenney, 47. The shooting occurred on Dec. 22 at the family’s home in Polk County, Florida.

According to Judd, the incident began after Jason Kenney had been drinking while watching Monday night’s NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. Judd said Kenney’s wife, Crystal Kenney, suggested that he turn off the game. The comment sparked an argument that escalated rapidly.

During the confrontation, Crystal Kenney instructed her 12-year-old son to call 911. Before he could do so, the boy heard gunshots and fled the home to seek help from a neighbor, Judd said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Crystal Kenney dead inside the residence. A 13-year-old girl, identified as the couple’s stepdaughter, had been shot in the shoulder and face.

She was transported to a hospital and is recovering from her injuries, authorities said.

“She said, ‘I begged him, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, don’t shoot me, and he shot me anyway,’” Judd said, recounting what the injured girl told investigators.

The 12-year-old boy was not physically harmed. Jason and Crystal Kenney’s 1-year-old daughter was also inside the home at the time of the shooting and was found unharmed, asleep in her crib, deputies said.

After the shooting, Jason Kenney fled the scene and contacted his sister, who lives in upstate New York, Judd said.

During the phone call, Kenney reportedly told her that he had “done something” wrong and said it would be the last time they spoke.

Kenney then drove to his father’s home. Deputies later located him there and attempted to take him into custody. As law enforcement officers tried to get Kenney to exit a shed on the property, he fatally shot himself, Judd said.

During a subsequent search of the family’s home, investigators discovered a handwritten note from Crystal Kenney urging her husband to seek help.

“You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” the note stated, according to Judd.

The surviving children have been placed in the custody of their grandparents.

“The entire family was destroyed,” Judd said. “Our homicide detectives are distraught. When you go in there, there is a beautiful Christmas tree with lots of Christmas presents under it, just like the nuclear family should be.”

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is closed following Jason Kenney’s death.
