A CNN legal analyst told “Out Front” host Erin Burnett on Wednesday that former Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director James Comey displayed a pattern of “poor judgment” while in office.

In July, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director John Ratcliffe referred Comey and former CIA Director John Brennan to the FBI, which launched a criminal investigation on the two of them for making false statements to Congress, Fox News reported. Former Department of Defense special counsel Ryan Goodman told Burnett that despite Trump’s animosity toward Comey, there might be “a there, there.” (RELATED: ‘Justice Must Be Served’: Donald Trump Puts Pam Bondi On Blast For Lack Of ‘Action’)

“James Comey has engaged in practices that I think show poor judgment. The inspector general of the Department of Justice has censured him essentially twice,” Goodman said. “One time, for what he did in the 2016 election with the Clinton investigation, saying that Mr. Comey had usurped the authority of the attorney general and had, when announcing that right before the election and the inspector general also said that Mr. Comey had mischaracterized the DoJ prosecutors’ legal positions, mischaracterizing as a consistent pattern.”

“And then the inspector general calls him out again a second time around for something completely different, in which he had left the office after being fired by President Trump and then had shared his memos of conversations with Trump to a friend to get it to the press,” Goodman continued. “That was also called as a dangerous example is what the inspector general said of Mr. Comey.”

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard also referred Comey to the Department of Justice in July, citing possible criminal activity related to the Obama Administration’s narrative that Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia.

In May 2023, Special Counsel John Durham released a report on the origins of the FBI investigation of allegations that former President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russia. Durham’s probe found that the FBI “did not and could not corroborate” the claims from the now-discredited Steele Dossier.

President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Attorney General Pam Bondi in a Saturday post on Truth Social, questioning the progress on investigating Comey, Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff of California and Democratic Attorney General Letitia James of New York.
