Former federal prosecutor Saritha Komatireddy is seeking the Republican nomination to challenge New York Attorney General Letitia James, the Democratic incumbent who has been at the center of several high-profile political and legal battles with President Trump, as reported by The New York Post.

Komatireddy, 41, planned to announce her candidacy Monday, joining a growing list of Republicans positioning themselves for a primary.

Komatireddy previously served in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn, where she held roles including Chief of International Narcotics and Money Laundering, Deputy Chief of Appeals, and Deputy Chief of General Crimes. She said her background gives her the experience needed to redirect the office.

“I’ve spent over a decade in the U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuting the worst of the worst. Terrorists, murderers, fraudsters, and hackers,” she said, noting she has handled cases involving al Qaeda, ISIS, and the Sinaloa cartel.

She added, “Now, I want to get the attorney general’s office back to basics — protecting New Yorkers and locking up criminals. Under Letitia James, the AG’s office has become preoccupied with partisan vendetta, and lost sight of what matters to most New Yorkers.”

Komatireddy, a married mother of four, previously clerked for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he served on the U.S. Court of Appeals. She currently lectures at Columbia University Law School and is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School. She has received multiple attorney general awards during her federal service.

She would need to win the Republican primary before facing James in the general election. Other Republicans considering a run include Michael Henry, the 2022 GOP nominee for attorney general, and attorney Khurram Dara, who works in the cryptocurrency sector.

Komatireddy stressed public safety as her top priority. “If New York isn’t safe, nothing else matters,” she said.

“If elected, I’ll focus all my energy on the safety of the people of New York – from Bethpage to Buffalo, Staten Island to Saratoga Springs, the people of the Empire State will be able to trust that they have an Attorney General focused on keeping them safe.”

James, 67, has served as attorney general since 2019. She has pursued high-profile cases involving major political figures.

Her office’s investigation into former Gov. Andrew Cuomo over sexual misconduct allegations preceded his resignation, which he maintains was unwarranted.

She also secured a civil fraud judgment against President Trump and the Trump Organization, alleging they inflated asset values over a decade.

However, a New York appeals court later threw out the more than $500 million fine, and President Trump has maintained the case was politically motivated.

In a separate matter, the Trump administration’s Department of Justice indicted James on mortgage-fraud charges tied to a home she purchased in Norfolk, Virginia, in August 2020 with a $109,600 loan.

Prosecutors alleged she claimed she would be the “sole borrower to occupy and use the property,” though her grandniece allegedly lived there and paid rent.

A federal judge dismissed the case last week, ruling that interim U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan had been improperly appointed and “had no lawful authority” to secure indictments against James or former FBI Director James Comey in a separate case.

James denied wrongdoing and accused President Trump of using the Justice Department for political retaliation. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has vowed to appeal the dismissal.
