Former New York Jets first-round draft pick Darron Lee is facing a first-degree murder charge after prosecutors said he used ChatGPT in the days before his girlfriend’s body was discovered to ask questions about how to cover up a killing, as reported by The New York Post.

Lee, 31, was arrested following the death of Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo, who authorities say was found dead last month inside a rental home in Ooltewah, Tennessee, outside Chattanooga.

During a preliminary hearing on Monday, prosecutors presented evidence they say shows Lee communicating repeatedly with the artificial intelligence chatbot about the situation surrounding Perpétuo’s death.

Ex-NFLer Darron Lee used ChatGPT for advice after allegedly killing his girlfriend, prosecutors say.

According to the reporting presented in court, Lee allegedly asked ChatGPT for advice after describing what he claimed had happened.

“Don’t know what to do right now. Fiancee [sic] did her crazy thing again, and now she’s messed up, I wake up, and she has two swollen eyes (i didn’t do anything, self-inflicted). She stabbed herself, slit her eye? Idk, but she isn’t waking up or responding, what do I do?” Lee allegedly wrote in a message to the chatbot.

Prosecutors said Lee also asked the chatbot about injuries that could occur during an accident.

He asked whether a person slipping and falling could result in puncture wounds.

“Yeah—— it can happen**, but there’s [redacted] to make. Can a slip-and-fall cause puncture wounds? Yes, but usually only under specific conditions?” the chatbot responded.

“I can help you sanity-check whether it lines up with a slip-and-fall or if it’s something that should be evaluated ASAP,” the chatbot added.

Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp told the court that Lee appeared to rely on the chatbot for advice over an extended period.

“He has conversations, dozens of conversations, back and forth with ChatGPT over a two-day period about what he did to Gabriella Perpetua in detail,” Wamp said.

“He asks how to cover it up. He asks what to say to 911.”

During the hearing, prosecutors also presented police body camera footage from officers who responded to the home.

In the footage shown in court, Lee appeared confused while explaining to officers how he said he discovered Perpétuo unresponsive.

“She wasn’t saying anything, and that’s when I called 911 immediately, and I was like what is going on… I was asleep for a long time,” Lee said in the video played during the hearing.

Lee allegedly told officers that Perpétuo suffered from narcolepsy and suggested she may have fallen in the shower.

However, investigators said evidence inside the home pointed to a violent struggle rather than an accidental fall.

According to authorities, Perpétuo was found topless when officers arrived at the home. Officials said she suffered extensive injuries.

An autopsy revealed severe brain trauma, a broken neck, widespread bruising across her body and large bite marks on her shoulder and thigh. Investigators also found stab wounds on her legs and significant injuries to her face.

The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as blunt force trauma.

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Detective Brian Lockhart previously testified about the condition of the home when officers arrived.

“There was blood going up the staircase, on the hand railing there was blood, on the walls there was blood, on the floor in the living room there was blood, in the floor on the hallway and the stairs,” Lockhart said.

Investigators said the home showed additional signs of disturbance. The microwave had been shattered, and bottles of alcohol and broken glass were scattered throughout the residence.

Authorities also said detectives found cleaning supplies upstairs, including bleach wipes and a spray bottle.

Lee, who was selected by the New York Jets as the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Prosecutors have indicated they will pursue the death penalty if Lee is convicted.
