Former Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Pleads No Contest as Home Invasion Case Ends With Two Misdemeanors

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore pleaded no contest Friday to two misdemeanor charges as part of a plea agreement that dropped a felony home invasion count and two other misdemeanor charges tied to a criminal case that arose immediately after he was fired by the university.

Moore, 39, entered the plea in Ann Arbor’s 14A 1 District Court. Under the agreement, Moore pleaded no contest to misdemeanor trespassing and misdemeanor malicious use of a telecommunications device in the context of a domestic relationship. In exchange, prosecutors dropped a felony home invasion charge as well as misdemeanor stalking and misdemeanor breaking and entering.

The plea deal was struck on the same day a judge was scheduled to hear a challenge to Moore’s December arrest, which originally involved three charges, including the felony. Moore’s sentencing is scheduled for April 14 in Washtenaw County court.

Here’s What They’re Not Telling You About Your Retirement

The case stemmed from an incident that occurred in December 2025, shortly after Michigan dismissed Moore. The university fired him on Dec. 10, 2025, citing an investigation that found “credible evidence” of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The legal case that followed centered on Moore’s actions after the firing and the fallout from that relationship.

Moore’s attorney, Ellen Michaels, disputed key premises of the prosecution and said the case should not have been brought as initially charged. “The charges were without factual and legal basis,” Michaels said while also criticizing the investigation and describing the situation as one where the woman’s personal lawyer was attempting to use the criminal case for leverage in a financial settlement.

The plea avoids the need for a trial and the testimony that would have come with it, which is often a central reason cases like this end in negotiated resolutions. A no contest plea is treated like a guilty plea for purposes of the criminal case, but it does not require an admission of guilt in the same way a straight guilty plea does.

The potential penalties Moore faces are tied to the two misdemeanor counts. Reporting on the agreement noted that trespassing carries up to 30 days in jail and that the telecommunications charge can carry up to one year, though analysts quoted in coverage suggested incarceration is unlikely in this outcome.

Michigan has not issued a public comment on the plea agreement in the immediate reporting, and the case now moves to sentencing rather than further hearings on the underlying arrest.

Moore’s coaching career at Michigan ended abruptly, and the legal case ensured the story stayed in public view well beyond the season. He was fired two seasons after succeeding Jim Harbaugh, and his departure triggered a major program transition heading into 2026.

Friday’s plea deal closes the criminal case’s main chapter with reduced charges and a set sentencing date. The next formal step is April 14, when the court will determine the final sentence under the misdemeanor convictions.
