Former Michigan Head Coach Sherrone Moore Arrested After Dismissal Due to ‘Inappropriate Relationship’ [WATCH]

Former Michigan Wolverines head football coach Sherrone Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday night, hours after the university announced his dismissal from the program.

Moore, 39, had been fired earlier in the day following an internal investigation into a reported policy violation involving a staff member.

Fox News Digital confirmed that Moore was being held in the county jail on Wednesday evening.

According to Pittsfield police, officers responded to a home as part of an assault investigation.

Police said a suspect was taken into custody and that the incident did not appear to be random.

The suspect was lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of potential charges by the county prosecutor’s office. Police said the investigation remained ongoing.

Moore’s dismissal was announced earlier Wednesday by Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel.

In a written statement, Manuel said, “credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

He added, “The conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Following news of the police investigation, the University of Michigan Athletic Department stated to Fox News Digital that it “cannot comment on personnel matters” and had “nothing to share beyond the initial statement.”

Francis Xavier “Biff” Poggi has been named interim head coach and is expected to lead the Wolverines on Dec. 31 when they face Texas in the Citrus Bowl.

Poggi previously stepped in for Moore earlier this season when Moore served a suspension connected to a sign-stealing investigation.

Moore has been married to his wife, Kelli, since 2015, and the couple has three daughters.

He became Michigan’s head coach in 2024 after Jim Harbaugh left the program to take the head coaching position with the Los Angeles Chargers.

In Moore’s first season, the Wolverines went 8-5 and won the ReliaQuest Bowl.

The team finished the current season with a 9-3 record, including a loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes.

Moore has not issued any public comment regarding his dismissal or the ongoing police investigation.

Before taking over as head coach, Moore worked in multiple roles on Michigan’s staff.

He served as the tight ends coach from 2018 to 2020 and spent three seasons as the offensive line coach from 2021 to 2023.

He was also the team’s offensive coordinator in 2023 and served as acting head coach for one game during Jim Harbaugh’s suspension. Moore was part of the staff when Michigan won the national championship.
