Panelists on Fox & Friends predicted Thursday that Democratic lawmakers’ outrage over Elon Musk’s dismantling of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) could come back to haunt them in future elections.
The discussion followed a heated protest earlier in the week, where several Democratic officials declared themselves “at war” with Musk and threatened a “hostile takeover” of the Republican Party.
On Tuesday, a group of Democratic lawmakers gathered outside the Department of Treasury to protest Musk’s decision to shut down USAID, an agency that has faced criticism for spending billions on progressive initiatives.
Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans
Some members took their rhetoric to an extreme, with Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) vowing to “set fire” to the Republican Party and calling Musk a “Nazi nepo baby” and a “godless, lawless billionaire.”
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) warned that the decision to shut down USAID could lead to violence, stating, “We may actually see someone get killed.” Similarly, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) urged Democrats to “fight in the streets.”
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), a frequent critic of former President Donald Trump, went on a four-minute tirade at the protest, expressing her frustration with both Trump and Musk.
During the Fox & Friends discussion, host Lawrence Jones suggested that this level of extreme rhetoric could backfire on Democrats in upcoming elections.
“Now you’ve got [Senate Minority Leader] Chuck Schumer, Maxine Waters, who is ranking member on financial service, you’ve got all of your leadership out there screaming. I don’t know how they recover from this. Nobody is gonna vote for crazy,” Jones said.
Co-host Brian Kilmeade described Musk’s appointment as a positive step for reducing government waste.
“This is a gift to have a forensic accountant go in there, the most talented businessman we have, adopted from South Africa, but they’re actually saying apartheid because he’s from South Africa? Are you crazy?” Kilmeade said.
Trump and Musk had both been vocal critics of USAID, which had allocated billions of taxpayer dollars toward progressive global initiatives, including a $1.5 billion LGBTQ advocacy fund in Latin America and the Caribbean announced in August 2024.
On Monday, Trump and Musk ordered the shutdown of USAID, informed staff to work remotely, and appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio as acting director of the agency.
Following the Tuesday protest, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt condemned the language used by Democratic officials, calling it “unacceptable” and urging them to be held accountable for their remarks.
As Musk moves forward with government efficiency reforms, the backlash from Democratic lawmakers continues to intensify.
The closure of USAID marks a major step in Trump’s plan to reduce federal spending, and with Musk now overseeing the process, further shakeups in government operations may be on the horizon.
