A traffic stop involving an illegal alien from Venezuela in Minneapolis escalated into a violent confrontation with law enforcement this week, drawing national attention and sharp reactions from state and local leaders as well as Fox News hosts covering the incident.

Fox News correspondent Matt Finn detailed how the situation unfolded, citing information from the Department of Homeland Security and video from the scene.

According to Finn, the incident began during a targeted traffic stop that quickly spiraled out of control as protesters intervened.

“Protesters break into vehicles, scatter documents on the ground and go through the documents that appear to be sensitive law enforcement papers also protesters apparently ripping a safe with guns out of one car,” Finn said.

“DHS says this all began when officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop of an illegal alien from Venezuela that subject tried to escape, crashed his car and then ran at 1.2 other people ganged up on the officer.”

Finn continued by describing the alleged ambush on the officer.

“DHS writes, as the officer was being ambushed and attacked by the two individuals, the original subject got loose and began striking the officer with a shovel or broomstick, fearing for his life and safety,” Finn said.

“As he was being ambushed by three individuals, the officer fired defensive shots to defend his life. The initial subject was hit in the leg.”

As the confrontation unfolded, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz issued public remarks condemning violence while placing blame on President Donald Trump. Finn relayed Walz’s statement during the Fox News segment.

“Governor Tim Walz, writing, state investigators have been on the scene in North Minneapolis. I know you’re angry. I’m angry. What Donald Trump wants is violence in the streets, but Minnesota will remain an island of decency, of justice, of community and of peace. Don’t give him what he wants,” Finn said.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also weighed in, criticizing Immigration and Customs Enforcement while urging protesters to stop escalating the situation. Frey accused ICE of misconduct while calling for calm.

“Let’s be very clear, I’ve seen conduct from ICE that is disgusting and is intolerable,” Frey said.

“If it were your city, it would be unacceptable there too. And for anyone that is taking the bait tonight, stop that is not helpful now.”

Finn later noted that Walz delivered a special statewide address around the same time as the shooting, in which the governor encouraged resistance to ICE activity.

“Now, last night, around the same time as the shooting, a special address from Governor Tim Walz was airing statewide,” Finn said.

“Wall said people are learning how to resist, and he urged Minnesotans to take video of ICE agents in neighborhoods to be used in prosecutions.”

In that address, Walz accused President Trump of intentionally stoking unrest.

“Donald Trump intends for it to get worse,” Walz said.

“This week, he went online to promise that quote, The Day of retribution and reckoning is coming that’s a direct threat against the people of this state who dared to vote against him three times and who continue to stand up for freedom with courage and empathy and profound grace.”

Finn added that despite claims of conflict between agencies, local police and federal agents were seen working together during the chaotic scene. He also referenced a separate incident involving the earlier shooting of Renee Goode.

“Mayor Frey says city and federal agencies are fighting against each other, but last night, even in the midst of this very chaotic scene, we did see local police and federal agents working together,” Finn said.

“And also, we’re learning more about the Renee Goode shooting that was more than a week ago here in this city. The officer involved in that shooting, which sparked a lot of this apparently had some type of internal bleeding in the torso, according to DHS.”

Fox News host Brian Kilmeade sharply criticized Frey’s stance and defended ICE operations.

“No, if you’re arresting illegal immigrant criminals in my city, I say thank you,” Kilmeade said.

“I also don’t know many people who are innocent, who run from the cops. I also don’t know many people that thinks is good idea. If you’re watching the cops try to apprehend somebody, to hit the cop or the ice agent, which who are law enforcement, by the way, keep in mind, under the umbrella law enforcement ICE has a certain job, so don’t say you’re pro cop and anti ICE. You can’t have both.”

Kilmeade added, “It’s like the world is upside down in Minneapolis.”

Ainsley Earhardt echoed that view, pointing to the seriousness of attacking police officers.

“When we were growing up, if you harmed a police officer, if you killed a police officer, in South Carolina, you got the electric chair,” Earhardt said.

“You didn’t go after police and beat them with a snow shovel. These are guys that are locking up the criminals.”

She also questioned opposition to ICE arrests.

“If you’re here illegally and you’re a criminal, you’re going to be locked up and probably deported,” Earhardt said.

“These are murderers. They’re rapists. One of the guys, sodomy on a girl and sodomy on a boy. DUIs, domestic violence.”

Steve Doocy concluded by describing what he said was organized resistance against ICE.

“There are groups that are organizing the people who are taking the pictures,” Doocy said.

“They’re getting training from activists on nonviolent tactics and how to document everything, how to understand their legal rights, how to use noise like whistles, and how to disrupt the operations of ICE so they know what the red line is.”

Doocy added, “But unfortunately, last night, once again, they crossed the Red Line. And you know this one ICE agent wound up scuffling with this Venezuelan migrant.”
