French President Emmanuel Macron began his Southeast Asia tour this week with a state visit to Vietnam, signing a series of major bilateral agreements and promoting France’s role in the Indo-Pacific.

However, the trip was overshadowed by a widely circulated video showing an unusual moment between President Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, as they disembarked from their plane in Hanoi.

Video footage captured by the Associated Press on Sunday evening showed the aircraft door opening upon arrival, followed by President Macron appearing at the doorway.

Brigitte Macron, still partially out of sight, was seen placing both hands on her husband’s face and pushing it away.

Macron appeared briefly surprised before regaining his composure and proceeding to wave to onlookers.

As the couple descended the aircraft stairs for an official greeting by Vietnamese officials, Brigitte Macron did not take her husband’s offered arm.

Initially, Macron’s office dismissed the video’s authenticity. However, the footage was later verified, and aides confirmed the interaction took place.

A close associate of the president downplayed the incident, characterizing it as a “squabble” between spouses.

An official from the Élysée Palace said, “It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing one last time before the start of the trip by having a laugh.”

Another source in the president’s entourage echoed the statement, describing the event as “a moment of togetherness” and blaming negative interpretations of the video on pro-Russian social media accounts.

The clip rapidly gained traction online, shared by users frequently critical of Macron.

The episode followed another recent controversy involving the French leader earlier this month, when pro-Russian accounts claimed Macron was photographed concealing a bag of cocaine during a meeting with UK Labour leader Keir Starmer and Germany’s Friedrich Merz aboard a train to Ukraine.

French officials denied the accusation, clarifying that the object was a tissue.

Despite the media attention, Macron’s diplomatic agenda in Vietnam proceeded as planned.

The French president’s visit marked the first official trip to the country by a French head of state in nearly a decade.

Vietnam is the first stop on Macron’s tour of Southeast Asia, which also includes visits to Indonesia and Singapore.

While in Hanoi, Macron signed over a dozen agreements with Vietnamese officials covering defense, civil nuclear energy, aerospace, and trade.

One notable deal included Vietnam’s budget airline VietJet purchasing 20 A330-900 aircraft from Airbus.

The agreements were announced during meetings with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong and Communist Party General Secretary To Lam.

During a joint press conference, Macron emphasized the importance of upholding a global order rooted in law.

“At a time of both great imbalance and a return to power-driven rhetoric, we must preserve a rules-based international order,” he said.

Macron also paid respects at a Hanoi war memorial, visited the historic 11th-century Temple of Literature, and reiterated France’s intent to serve as a strategic partner for Vietnam.

He emphasized cooperation in key areas, including critical minerals, high-speed rail, and renewable energy.

France, he said, would assist Vietnam in transitioning away from coal while bolstering capacity in civil nuclear power.

France’s recent deployment of a carrier strike group to the South China Sea earlier this year, Macron added, underscores its commitment to upholding international maritime law.

Vietnam and China have a maritime agreement for the Gulf of Tonkin but remain at odds over broader South China Sea claims.

President Macron’s remarks positioned Vietnam as a pivotal partner for France in the Indo-Pacific region. The two nations currently maintain a “comprehensive strategic partnership,” a diplomatic status Vietnam shares with just a few global powers including the U.S., China, and Russia.

This marks President Macron’s first visit to Vietnam since assuming office in 2017.
