As tensions mount between the federal government and Chicago leadership over deportation policies, some residents are voicing their support for stricter immigration enforcement, aligning themselves with the policies of President Donald Trump.

During an appearance on The Ingraham Angle, Chicago resident Vashon Tuncle criticized local and state officials for failing to address the concerns of residents over crime and illegal immigration.

“The people of Chicago, we love Trump,” Tuncle said.

“The numbers spoke for themselves during the election … we actually wanted Trump to come here.”

Dennis Quaid’s #1 Warning for Americans

Tuncle claims to represent a growing faction of Chicagoans who feel abandoned by leaders such as Governor J.B. Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson.

While both officials oppose federal deportation efforts, citing human rights concerns, Tuncle argues that their stance has placed residents at risk.

“Brandon Johnson has sworn an oath to the people of Chicago that he must protect them. J.B. Pritzker has sworn an oath to the people of Illinois that he will protect us,” he stated.

“They failed to do that because they’re continuously telling us that they will protect the illegal immigrants here, knowing that they’re bringing all the drugs and crime here in our city.”

Immigration enforcement has become a major flashpoint in Chicago, especially after Tom Homan, the administration’s “border czar,” declared the city “ground zero” for deportation efforts.

During a recent visit, federal authorities removed a criminal migrant with a lengthy rap sheet dating back to the Obama administration.

“He basically had a rap sheet of doing horrendous acts to children,” Tuncle stated. “Why is this guy leaving now in 2025?”

Despite the increased federal enforcement, Mayor Brandon Johnson has remained firm in his opposition, reaffirming Chicago’s sanctuary city status and rejecting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

“I’m standing with the full force of government today to demonstrate that Chicago is a welcoming city. Regardless of who is in the White House,” Johnson said at a press conference last month.

“Being a welcoming city just simply states that our local police department will not behave as federal agents. There’s a clear separation of powers there.”

Not all Chicago officials agree with Johnson’s stance.

Alderman Ray Lopez has publicly criticized the mayor, accusing him of prioritizing “hyper-liberal White progressives” over the concerns of Black, Latino, and undocumented communities.

“He’s not concerned about African-Americans, he’s not concerned about Latinos, and he’s absolutely not concerned about undocumented Mexicans who will bear the brunt of his actions,” Lopez said.

“He is playing the game of chicken with their lives, and it’s disgusting.”

Lopez introduced a proposal to allow local law enforcement to assist ICE in detaining criminal migrants, but the measure was blocked by the city council.

Tuncle, like many other residents, believes Johnson’s leadership does not reflect the views of the majority.

“People in this city are sick of it,” Tuncle said.

“They absolutely cannot stand the illegal immigrants. I mean, they’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, and all sorts of heinous acts. People are just sick of it. They love people like Tom Homan because they’re cleaning up the city.”

Since August 2022, Chicago has welcomed over 50,000 migrants, according to city data. The “New Arrivals Mission,” which provides housing, healthcare, and additional services, has cost the city over half a billion dollars.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed a federal lawsuit against Illinois, the city of Chicago, Governor Pritzker, and Mayor Johnson, accusing them of obstructing federal immigration law.

The lawsuit states that Illinois and Cook County laws represent an “intentional effort to obstruct the Federal Government’s enforcement of federal immigration law and to impede consultation and communication between federal, state, and local law enforcement officials that is necessary for federal officials to carry out federal immigration law and keep Americans safe.”

Newly confirmed Attorney General Pam Bondi has also taken action, issuing a directive to pause federal funding for sanctuary cities like Chicago.

“The Department of Justice will ensure that, consistent with law, ‘sanctuary jurisdictions’ do not receive access to Federal funds from the Department,” Bondi’s memo stated.

Tuncle expressed optimism about Bondi’s appointment, stating that her confirmation could lead to accountability for city officials.

“I’m also excited about Pam Bondi being confirmed as attorney general,” Tuncle said.

“It’s looking like Brandon Johnson is going to be behind bars pretty soon.”

As the legal battle intensifies, Chicago remains deeply divided on immigration policy.

While city leaders stand firm on maintaining sanctuary status, some residents and officials demand stricter enforcement.

With the federal lawsuit pending and funding cuts to sanctuary cities on the horizon, the conflict between Chicago leadership and Trump’s administration is only escalating.
