Just when you thought that the Protection Racket Media had it bad, Gallup brings bad news for the Swamp as well. And just in time for wobbly Republicans on Capitol Hill, too.
A new Gallup poll shows that Americans have lost confidence in federal agencies. In fact, the drop has put most of them at their lowest point of support ever in Gallup’s longitudinal surveys. The timing of this data is exquisite:
Americans’ ratings of six prominent federal government agencies have deteriorated markedly since last year. The job ratings of each of these agencies — the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — are now at or near their lowest points in Gallup’s trend. …
The decline in agency job ratings since 2024 is greatest for FEMA (20 percentage points), the CIA (10 points) and the CDC (nine points). The FDA and EPA have fallen seven points each, and the IRS is down six points. These agencies’ job performance ratings as “excellent” or “good” range from 25% to 31%, which are record lows for all but the IRS, which was one point lower in 2013.
This couldn’t come at a worse moment for Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats. At the moment, Schumer’s staging a shutdown to force Republicans into reversing the cuts made in their reconciliation bill, aka the One Big Beautiful Bill. He’s essentially holding the jobs at these and other agencies hostage to get these reversals, a strategy which assumes that voters actually care about these agencies being able to operate.
This should come at the best moment for Republicans in the White House and Senate. If voters dislike these agencies, it makes wholesale reductions within them much easier to sell. For some reason, though, Senate Majority Leader John Thune and other GOP leadership have quailed at that prospect. According to the WSJ, they have convinced Donald Trump and Russ Vought to abandon their swamp-draining pledges at the very moment when voters may be best positioned to reward downsizing efforts in the federal bureaucracy.
Instead, Republicans are treating Schumer as if he has leverage in this equation. Gallup’s results in this poll makes it clear that Schumer’s bluffing on a pair of deuces, politically speaking.
Nor is that the only bad news for Democrats in this poll. Guess which federal agency actually increased in approval from voters?
Meanwhile, only one of the 15 agencies measured both last year and this year, the Department of Homeland Security, has seen a significant improvement in its job rating.
To be fair, that’s mainly due to Republicans supporting DHS’ actual enforcement of immigration law. Republicans show increased approval of most agencies, understandably as they implement Republican policies and priorities. Democrats have gone negative on all of these agencies for the same reason. The two exceptions are FEMA and the USPS, where GOP approval dropped as well as Democrats’. However, Republican support for DHS went up fifty-nine points, far outstripping the Department of War/Defense gain of 38 points. But still, DHS is the fourth highest rated agency polled by Gallup with a 42/56 approval rating, despite constant media and Democrat attacks on their enforcement activities.
Democrats are moving further and further to the fringe of American politics, on immigration and on the Swamp. Trump and the GOP have done an excellent job putting pressure on Democrats on immigration. It’s time to do the same on the federal bureaucracy and force Schumer’s hand.
Editor’s Note: The Schumer Shutdown is here. Rather than put the American people first, Chuck Schumer and the radical Democrats forced a government shutdown for healthcare for illegals. They own this.
