In 1997, Jim Carrey starred in the second of what would be three Tom Shadyac collaborations – Liar Liar. It made a ton of money at the box office and showcased Carrey’s physical comedy in a way that was both charming and very funny.
Two years before that, Willie Brown, the biggest power broker in California politics, coming off a 14-year run as Speaker of the state’s Assembly, decided to hang up his legislator’s hat and campaign for mayor of San Francisco. At 60-years-old, he tied up loose ends, ceasing his affair with Kamala Harris, who was 29 at the time. He won his campaign easily, because 1) it was San Francisco, and 2) he was Willie Brown.
In his first full year in office, Nancy Pelosi’s nephew-in-law, Gavin Newsom, was looking for a government job. Brown appointed him parking and traffic commissioner. It was the stepping stone Newsom needed. He was appointed, then successfully ran the same year Carrey’s film came out, for county commissioner. He would parlay that into his own two-term mayoral stint, followed by two terms as California’s lieutenant governor, and today is coming down the home stretch of a two-term stint as the Golden State governor. And all along the way, his political career has resembled one of Carrey’s most memorable scenes in the 1997 film.
We could talk about the budget deficit in the hundreds of millions he racked up as Mayor of San Francisco, and how thin-skinned he is at getting criticism.

And if you were inclined to give him a Mulligan, a hall pass for that one indiscretion, how about a 39-year-old Newsom, again running San Francisco as Mayor, dating a 19-year-old girl, getting her liquored up at a Newsom event, and then changing her online profile to show her 7 years older than she really is?

We could talk about the Scam Tram – the Little Engine that Couldn’t – the train from nowhere to nowhere, and how it’s bankrupted the state. We could spend hours on the Pasadena and Pacific Palisades fires, and how months later, the state has abandoned the people burned out, preventing them from getting permits to rebuild. The policy and personal antics of Gavin Newsom are numerous and scandalous, to be certain, but no, that’s not what this column is about. I just wanted to demonstrate that Newsom has been his own worst enemy since he took the supervisory meter maid job from Willie Brown.
The same media two years ago that proclaimed Joe Biden was mentally sharp as ever and it was hard to keep up with him, a year later branding Kamala Harris as brat, the absolutely most-qualified person to run for the presidency ever, is back with the new hotness. This year, Gavin Newsom is the biggest thing since…the last Democrat trying to be presented to the public as the party’s white knight.

Much is being made these days of Newsom, through the social media team in his governor’s office fighting back at President Donald Trump by aping him. This is the Mandalorian Way, if you ask the same people that said Kamala was going to win easily.
In the wake of Texas redrawing their Congressional district maps, and a bunch of other states moving in the same direction, Newsom has used his Democratic supermajorities in both the Assembly and State Senate to scrap the part of the California Constitution that says he can’t do what he just signed into law last Friday.
To understand how large a banana Newsom and the Democrats just turned the Republic of California into, here’s transparency, Democratic-style.

To divert your eyes from Newsom throwing democracy, and the state’s Constitution overboard, Newsom and his social media team have been focused like a laser beam on the President’s takeover of Washington, D.C. They’ve decided to play fast and loose with stats, conflating the difference between Washington, which is a federal district not belonging to any state, and other cities in the country that do. It was one faceplant after another yesterday.

You know what San Francisco has that Miami doesn’t? A Google human poop map. As for the data, it’s just not true. If you include all of Miami-Dade County, and compare that to the city limits of San Francisco, Gavin’s former stomping grounds still boast a 14% higher murder rate per capita. If you only include Miami proper, San Francisco has a 17% rate.
Newsom also tries to pin this on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, instead of looking at the people directly accountable for the city’s crimes – mayors. In San Francisco, Dan Lurie is the current Democrat running the city, and follows Democrats going back to 1964. It was two years before I was born when the city by the Bay last had a Republican running things.

John Whitmire, not Governor Greg Abbott, is the current mayor of Houston. And wouldn’t you know, he’s also a Democrat. In fact, the last time a Republican ran Houston, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder sang about Ebony And Ivory. That was in 1982.

Not quite as long, but you would have to go back 24 years to find a Republican serving Memphis as Mayor. Paul Young, a Democrat, is currently serving.

Again, Newsom’s team is cringingly comparing Gavin’s record as governor with other red state governors, instead of looking at who’s running the cities where the violent crimes are taking place. In Mississippi, if you’re looking for crime areas, Jackson is the place to go. Leland Speed was the last Republican Mayor of Jackson, but you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who can remember how good a job he did. He left office 75 years ago. It’s been wall-to-wall Democrat mayors since, the latest being Chokwe Antar Lumumba.

Missouri Senator Josh Hawley is not the mayor of St. Louis. Cara Spencer is. Any guesses as to which political party she affiliates? Not only is Spencer a Democrat, it’s been three-quarters of a century of since Democratic mayors running St. Louis into the ground.
Over and over again yesterday, Newsom’s team kept kicking their own hind quarters thinking they were taking it to red state America. It’s embarrassing, really, and I sincerely hope it continues unabated.
If stats are your thing, you would need to go down to Tulsa in 20th place on the most violent crime per capita list to find a city with a Republican Mayor. The top 19 on that list, one of which no city would boast making an appearance, are all run by Democrats.

And here’s the cherry on top of the butt-kicking sundae. The reason Newsom is going down this comparison road is to make the point that D.C. shouldn’t have warranted the national takeover response it’s received. Blue cities in red states boast a higher per capita average, Newsom wants you to believe. Of course, part of the story that Newsom won’t tell you is that D.C. is simultaneously in the middle of a scandal, accused of cooking the books when it comes to reporting violent crimes by underreporting data or not reporting data at all. The MPD police commander was caught red-handed.
The irony in all of this is that Gavin Newsom, while trying to showcase the California spin to a national story he ought not bring up, has also cooked the books when reporting crime to the FBI. And for the story, let’s go to that right-wing fake news site, Axios. From 2022…
California had the second lowest percentage of law enforcement agencies turn over crime data to the FBI last year.
The big picture: The estimated number of violent crimes in the U.S. decreased slightly in 2021 from 2020, according to the FBI — but the data is incomplete because 40% of law enforcement agencies nationwide failed to report their crime statistics.
Experts say the data gap makes it harder to analyze crime trends and fact check claims politicians make about crime, the Marshall Project’s Weihua Li reports.
Context: The FBI’s annual data set is the foremost way to understand how crime is changing across the U.S., measuring trends like how many murders or rapes took place last year or total people arrested on an annual basis.
By the numbers: An Axios analysis of FBI data released earlier this year found that 2% of California’s law enforcement agencies turned in crime data.
Zoom in: None of San Francisco’s seven law enforcement agencies reported crime data to the FBI in 2021.
The fever swamp and Resistance media types will tell you that people like me are scared of Newsom’s meteoric rise in popularity. I wake up pinching myself, scarcely believing that the good fortune of the Republicans might continue well into the next decade if Democrats make the mistake of nominating Gavin.
