Professional golfer Phil Mickelson weighed in publicly this week on California Governor Gavin Newsom’s decision to file a lawsuit against President Donald Trump over electric vehicle infrastructure funding.
In a post on social media, Mickelson criticized the governor for prioritizing political battles while major issues continue to affect residents across the state.
Newsom announced legal action against the Trump administration, accusing the president of withholding billions of dollars allocated by Congress for electric vehicle projects.

The governor claimed the decision would benefit China, harm American innovation, and cost domestic jobs.
California’s lawsuit is part of a broader dispute over electric vehicle policy. Newsom argued that Trump’s actions are politically motivated and pose a threat to both environmental progress and California’s economic development.
“We are not going to stand by while these efforts undermine thousands of jobs and billions in investment,” Newsom said.
Mickelson, who is a California native, responded to the announcement by highlighting the state’s ongoing struggles with high living costs and burdensome taxes.

He pointed to what he sees as misplaced priorities by the governor.
In a sarcastic social media post, Mickelson referenced California’s high-speed rail project, which has drawn national criticism for its ballooning costs and delayed construction.
“Stay after it, governor. Show him what a great high-speed railway system we have, and I’m sure he’ll change his mind,” Mickelson wrote.

The California high-speed rail project was initially approved by voters in 2008 and was intended to connect San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The project has since encountered substantial cost overruns and delays.
The current estimated cost is approximately $130 billion, and much of the rail line has yet to be completed. Critics of the project have raised concerns over its viability and long-term sustainability.
President Trump has previously addressed the high-speed rail project, using it as an example of what he calls failed state-level infrastructure management.
Speaking from the White House, Trump referred to the project as “the worst cost overrun thing I’ve ever seen.”
“A little train going from San Francisco to Los Angeles that’s being run by Gavin Newscum, the governor of California. Ever heard of Gavin Newscum?” Trump told reporters.
“That train is the worst cost overrun thing I’ve ever seen. It’s hundreds of billions for a stupid project that should’ve never been built.”

Newsom has defended the rail project as a long-term investment in the state’s transportation infrastructure and an essential part of California’s climate agenda.
However, the delays and cost increases have continued to draw criticism from both state and federal officials.
Mickelson’s remarks come amid rising public frustration in California over affordability issues, housing shortages, and economic instability.
His post reflects growing criticism from both residents and public figures who argue the state’s leadership is more focused on partisan conflict than addressing everyday problems faced by Californians.
The legal dispute between Newsom and the Trump administration over electric vehicle funding is expected to move forward in federal court. No court date has been announced at this time.
