Grammy-winning singer Michael Bolton has publicly shared for the first time that he has been battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, since December 2023.
As The New York Post reported, the 72-year-old artist detailed his experience and the resulting physical toll in an interview published Wednesday with People magazine.
Bolton said the diagnosis came just before the 2023 holiday season. Following the discovery of a brain tumor, he underwent surgery and then a second brain operation in January 2024 due to a post-surgical infection.

He completed radiation and chemotherapy treatment in October, and now receives MRI scans every two months to monitor the status of the cancer. His most recent scan in April was clear.
“You’re reaching into your resources and your resolve in a way that you never would have thought,” Bolton said. “Succumbing to the challenge is not an option. You’re really quickly drawn into a duel.”
As a result of treatment, Bolton reported difficulties with short-term memory, speech, and mobility. He is currently recovering at home in Connecticut with the support of his daughters Isa, 49, Holly, 47, and Taryn, 45, along with his six grandchildren.
“Whenever you find yourself in any kind of challenging position, just to know that you’re not alone going through it is a big deal,” Bolton said. “It actually helps people to know. It reminds them that they’re not alone.”

Taryn told People, “We’re in this together, and that’s it.” Holly recalled that just after his first surgery, a nurse was surprised by Bolton’s spontaneous singing in the hospital. “I remember one of the nurses had no idea who he was, and she’s like, ‘Do you know he sings like this?’”
As part of his recovery, Bolton has committed to meditation, physical training, voice therapy, and regular vocal lessons. “I find comfort in general more easily,” he said. “It’s unthinkable for it to be okay not to make the most of your life.”
He added that he’s also confronting “a reality of mortality” brought on by the diagnosis. “Suddenly a new light has gone on that raises questions, including ‘Am I doing the best that I can do with my time?’ I want to keep going. I feel there’s still a lot to do on the fight side.”
In January, Bolton informed fans in a social media statement that he had undergone brain surgery and was recovering at home. “Thanks to my incredible medical team, the surgery was a success,” he wrote.
He also announced a temporary break from touring, noting, “It is always the hardest thing for me to ever disappoint my fans or postpone a show, but have no doubt I am working hard to accelerate my recovery and get back to performing soon.”
As of now, Bolton has no upcoming tour dates listed on his official website.
