Fox News host Greg Gutfeld offered a scathing critique of the recent presidential debate, calling it a “sham” due to what he described as biased moderation and a lack of fairness in how the candidates were treated.
During a segment on The Five, Gutfeld argued that Kamala Harris’ performance was strategically shielded from scrutiny, while former President Donald Trump was held to a much higher standard.
“You could say, if you complained about the refs, you’re losing. Well, if the refs are corrupt, you’ve got to complain, because everybody lost,” Gutfeld said, expressing frustration with the debate’s structure. He criticized the moderators, David Muir and Linsey Davis, saying, “I actually got dumber watching it. I felt like my brain was being waterboarded by the sheer nonsense of these idiot moderators.”

Gutfeld pointed out that the debate format, particularly the muted microphones, distracted from the real issues at hand. “We were so sidetracked by the mechanics of the debate, the muted mics, that we forgot about them. I honestly don’t know how anyone can decide who won the debate,” he stated. Gutfeld went on to describe the event as “a sham competition,” comparing it to “trying to guess the price of a painting that you suspect is a forgery.”
In his view, the debate was rigged from the start. “This is truly the first DEI debate where one candidate was subjected to a high standard and the other was held to no standards at all,” Gutfeld said, suggesting that the moderators tilted the playing field in favor of Harris.
He criticized liberals for supporting a debate format that he believes removed fairness, saying, “A liberal should be ashamed that your candidate needed the odds to be stacked so heavily in their favor.”
Gutfeld further claimed that Harris entered and exited the debate as “a mystery,” noting that this was the goal — to keep her image tightly controlled. “For many Americans, Harris entered as a mystery and exited as a mystery, and that was the goal to keep her under wraps,” he said. He also argued that Harris’ performance shouldn’t be celebrated, but rather the moderators should be congratulated for “doing the heavy lifting.”
The Fox News host also accused Harris of spreading misinformation during the debate, citing examples such as “the fine people hoax,” “the bloodbath, Project 2025,” and “the abortion ban,” all of which Gutfeld claimed have been debunked. “Would she have done that knowing that there would be consequences? She did that knowing there would be no consequences, no follow-ups at all,” he said.
Gutfeld concluded his critique by accusing the media of betraying the public’s trust. “This was actually a betrayal of knowledge,” he stated. “Instead of the opportunity to gain knowledge, they chose to cover it up and betray the public.” He emphasized the need for real questions and follow-ups for Harris, expressing disappointment that the debate didn’t deliver. “I went by this stupid assumption that maybe they would ask Kamala some real questions and follow-ups. I was tricked,” Gutfeld lamented.
Dana Perino, a fellow panelist, added that Republicans must be cautious in future debates, understanding the biased playing field they face.
Gutfeld echoed that sentiment, warning viewers that the media will always prioritize its interests over those of the public.
