The ongoing media focus on a deported El Salvadoran national — whom left-leaning outlets continue to refer to as a “Maryland man” — has sparked renewed debate over immigration enforcement, with conservative voices pushing back on the narrative being circulated by Democrats and mainstream media outlets.
The individual at the center of the controversy, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, was deported after two separate immigration judges found him to be a member of the MS-13 gang.
Despite these rulings, Democratic lawmakers and several media outlets have sought to portray Garcia as a victim of Trump administration immigration policies.

On The Five on Fox News, co-host Greg Gutfeld addressed the coverage during a discussion on the case.
When asked by co-host Jesse Watters whether the situation amounts to a constitutional crisis, Gutfeld dismissed the framing.
“You know what’s funny? I don’t care,” Gutfeld said. “I honestly don’t care. I bet the viewers at home feel this narrative at work. What is strange about this story?”
Gutfeld emphasized that the overwhelming majority of Americans support the deportation of illegal aliens, particularly those with criminal records.

“The last, what, 8 days? 7 days? Has been about one person. One person. I don’t even know his name. I don’t care. If he’s here illegally, he’s gotta go,” he said.
The deportation order for Garcia dates back to 2019, but it was delayed due to a judge’s ruling that he might face threats from gangs in El Salvador.
That delay ended this year after the U.S. Supreme Court determined that a federal judge in Maryland had overstepped her authority in ordering his return.
The high court said the U.S. may “facilitate” his return only if El Salvador chooses to release him.
Gutfeld continued by using an analogy to illustrate public frustration with illegal immigration.
“You walk down your box seats, there’s somebody sitting in your seat,” he said.
“And you go, why is this guy sitting in my seat? And they go, well, he’s not supposed to be there. But you know he’s a family man. He’s got a job. That’s not on me. That’s my seat.”
“That’s not my concern where that seat is. He’s gotta go,” Gutfeld added.
The controversy over Garcia has been amplified by remarks from Democratic lawmakers like Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), who announced plans to travel to El Salvador to advocate for Garcia’s return.
Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), a former illegal alien, also expressed support for the effort.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has pointed to Garcia’s deportation as part of a broader crackdown on violent gang activity.
In recent weeks, the White House has highlighted immigration enforcement actions involving individuals with criminal records, including members of MS-13 and the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.
Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security for Public Affairs, confirmed during a recent interview with ABC News that Garcia had been legally adjudicated as an MS-13 member.
“There’s actually two separate immigration judges… who have confirmed and ruled that he is a member of MS-13,” she said.
McLaughlin also rejected attempts by the media to label Garcia as a “Maryland man,” calling it misleading. “This guy was in our country illegally. He is an El Salvadorian citizen,” she said.
As the political battle continues, Gutfeld suggested that Democrats’ sudden interest in Garcia is more about attacking President Trump than any genuine concern for the individual.
“It was really easy for Democrats to open the floodgates and be seen as the heroes,” he said.
“It’s always going to be harder to send them back.”
He added that the left’s focus on Garcia is temporary.
“Next week, they will have moved on to whatever the ‘new’ thing is.”
