House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the return of the January 6 subcommittee on Monday with Democratic California Rep. Eric Swalwell serving as the top-ranking member.
The committee will feature several notable House Democrats, including Reps. Jasmine Crockett of Texas and Jamie Raskin of Maryland, to make sure Americans “never forget who was responsible” for the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Jeffries announced in a press release. He praised Swalwell for being a “highly accomplished former prosecutor” and a “skilled legislator” who holds powerful people accountable.
“Against this backdrop, House Democrats are fighting back. I am pleased to appoint Congressman Eric Swalwell to serve as Ranking Member. As the proud son of a cop, highly accomplished former prosecutor and skilled legislator experienced in holding powerful Washington politicians accountable, Rep. Swalwell will relentlessly ensure that the American people never forget who was responsible for the events of January 6th,” Jeffries said.
“It is also my honor to appoint two talented Members of the House Judiciary Committee and distinguished attorneys, Reps. Jasmine Crockett and Jared Moskowitz, to serve on the subcommittee. Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, one of the country’s leading defenders of the Constitution and the rule of law, will serve as an ex officio member,” the minority leader continued. Swalwell was at the center of controversy following reports about his alleged relationship with Christine Fang, a Chinese national suspected of spying for the People’s Republic of China by surrounding herself with mostly male American politicians. Fang reportedly raised money for Swalwell’s congressional reelection campaign in 2014 and placed an intern in his congressional office.
In 2015, Swalwell was briefed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) about Fang’s role as a suspected Chinese spy and said he cut off all contact with her. Fang fled the U.S. that same year.
The House Ethics Committee cleared Swalwell of any wrongdoing regarding Fang in May 2023.
Swalwell posted a bizarre video of himself pretending to get a vaccine on Aug. 26 and then dying because Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is in charge.

Crockett, on the other hand, is known for her contentious behavior toward her colleagues during congressional hearings. She created the infamous “beach blonde, bad built, butch body” line during a spat with Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and even tried to profit off of the remark with merch online.
After a tragic flood in her state killed 27 children, Crockett posted a lengthy video of herself to Instagram on July 9 where she spoke about how weighed down she was by President Donald Trump and even gave a shoutout to her hairdresser for her new haircut.
The Texas congresswoman allegedly “terrorizes” her staff by screaming at them and forcing them to treat her like royalty, the New York Post first reported. Sources said that Crockett was more interested in being an influencer than a public servant for her constituents.
Jeffries accused House Republicans of trying to “whitewash the violence” that occurred during the riot that happened several years ago.
