House Democratic leaders sharply criticized the Trump administration Thursday following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Minneapolis, calling for multiple investigations and rejecting the administration’s account of the incident, as reported by Fox News.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, joined by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, addressed reporters during a morning press conference, where both men condemned the response of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and questioned the justification for the shooting.
“Let me first say that the killing of Renee Nicole Good was an abomination, a disgrace. And blood is clearly on the hands of those individuals within the administration who have been pushing an extreme policy that has nothing to do with immigration enforcement connected to removing violent felons from this country,” Jeffries said.
Jeffries stated that Democrats support deporting violent criminals who are in the country illegally but argued that the administration’s actions do not align with that goal.
“We support the removal of violent felons from this country who are here illegally. But that’s not what this administration has been doing under the so-called leadership of Kristi Noem, who’s a stone-cold liar. There’s no evidence at all that this was a justified shooting,” he added.
Schumer echoed Jeffries’ criticism and said he believes the incident warrants extensive scrutiny at multiple levels of government.
This Could Be the Most Important Video Gun Owners Watch All Year
“I watched the video. You felt like your stomach was being punched. Looking at the video, there seemed no justification for what these agents did. There needs to be a full investigation at the federal level. Although I have little faith in the FBI at doing a fair investigation or DHS, but at the local level as well,” Schumer said.
The press conference occurred as tensions escalated in Minneapolis, where hundreds of protesters confronted federal agents following the shooting.
Federal authorities appeared to detain at least four individuals during the demonstrations. Protesters were heard shouting “shame” at officers and telling them to “go home” as clashes developed near federal buildings.
Video from the scene showed ICE agents firing pepper balls and deploying tear gas as multiple scuffles broke out between demonstrators and law enforcement.
Good was shot and killed on Wednesday during an encounter with ICE agents.
She was later identified as a U.S. citizen. The incident has sparked widespread protests and intensified political debate over federal immigration enforcement operations.
Noem defended the actions of ICE agents following the shooting, stating that agents repeatedly instructed Good to exit her vehicle and stop interfering with law enforcement operations, but she refused to comply.
Noem also said Good had been “stalking and impeding” agents throughout the day.
According to Noem, Good attempted to “weaponize her vehicle” and “attempted to run a law enforcement officer over” before she was shot. Federal officials have maintained that the agent involved acted in self-defense.
The shooting and subsequent protests have deepened divisions on Capitol Hill, with Democratic leaders demanding investigations while the administration stands by its account of the incident.
No timeline has been announced for the completion of any federal or local reviews.
