Joe Biden’s recent vacation, which has stretched over two weeks, has sparked widespread criticism and raised questions about his leadership during a time of ongoing national and international crises.
Biden began his vacation in mid-August, following his speech at the Democratic National Convention, where he passed the torch to Kamala Harris as the party’s leading candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
His vacation included a week in Santa Barbara, California, followed by time spent at his home in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

While Biden relaxed on the beach, conservative commentators and political opponents have been vocal about the optics of his absence from Washington.
Conservative commentator Bill Mitchell took to social media platform X to express his concerns, writing, “Biden’s 16th day on the beach while the country’s in turmoil? That’s 532 days on vacation—40% of his presidency! Seriously, who’s running the country while he’s working on his tan?”

During his vacation, Biden issued a statement on Saturday mourning the death of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, an American citizen and dual U.S.-Israeli national who was taken hostage by Hamas.

In his statement, Biden claimed to have “worked tirelessly” to secure the release of Goldberg-Polin and other hostages, vowing to “keep working around the clock for a deal.” The timing of this statement, which coincided with his beach vacation, has drawn skepticism, as many questioned how the president could be working “around the clock” while on vacation.
The White House has defended Biden’s activities during this period, with spokeswoman Saloni Sharma stating that “there is no such thing as a presidential ‘vacation.’” She added that Biden is “always working wherever he goes,” a claim that some have questioned given the duration and timing of his time away from the White House.

In contrast to Biden’s leisurely time on the beach, former President Donald Trump, who is actively campaigning for a second term, has maintained a busy schedule.
Trump has held several rallies in key battleground states and recently secured the endorsement of former Independent presidential candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. during a visit to Arizona.

Additionally, Trump paid his respects at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, commemorating the 13 service members killed during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Trump has not held back in criticizing Biden and Harris, particularly over their handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal. On Truth Social, Trump labeled the Biden administration as full of “FOOLS” and criticized the “Incompetence” he believes led to the disastrous exit from Afghanistan.
Adding to the scrutiny, Biden’s vacation comes after he dropped out of the presidential race in late July, leaving Kamala Harris as the Democratic frontrunner. Joe Biden’s low profile during this period has fueled further questions about his commitment and capability to lead the nation, especially during times of crisis.
Hersh Goldberg-Polin, the American citizen whose death Biden mourned, was one of several hostages taken by Hamas.
His body was discovered on Saturday in a tunnel under the city of Rafah in Gaza, along with the bodies of five other hostages. All six had been shot in the head by Hamas militants before Israeli forces could rescue them.
Goldberg-Polin, who had just turned 23, was attending a music festival for peace in Israel when he was taken hostage. He had lost his arm while helping others during the initial attack by Hamas.
Biden’s handling of the hostage crisis, coupled with his extended vacation, continues to be a point of contention as the 2024 presidential election looms closer.
