Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson publicly criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass during a recent gathering in California, where he addressed concerns over the state’s handling of fire recovery efforts and federal funding, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.
Speaking to a group that included individuals reportedly affected by recent fires, Gibson accused state leaders of following a path similar to what has taken place in Maui following the Lahaina wildfire disaster.
Referring to a government-led land repurposing effort in Hawaii, Gibson told the crowd, “Newsom wants to do the Maui plan — There aren’t any more locals living there anymore. They all had to leave town.”

The comments were captured on video and circulated on social media, including by the account Wall Street Apes on X. In the footage, Gibson questioned the transparency and intent behind Newsom’s request for $40 billion in federal funds.
“Now Gavin has asked for 40 billion of federal dollars to do whatever he has in mind. Why would we trust him with that kind of funding?”
He added, “See, along with that federal money should come a federal investigation. We need to see what’s happening with our money, with our federal dollars.”
Gibson also questioned whether residents of specific neighborhoods, such as the Palisades or Altadena, were being included in any planning process for redevelopment.

“Do you think the people of the Palisades or Altadena are going to be consulted about how their areas are reimagined by Newsom and Bass?” he asked.
During his remarks, Gibson called for leadership that addresses problems proactively.
“California deserves leadership that does more than acknowledge a problem. It deserves leaders who take real, meaningful steps towards addressing these threats to our community. You deserve better.”
He concluded his remarks by emphasizing the need for action and public accountability.
“It’s time for accountability. It’s time for leadership that doesn’t wait until it’s too late. And most of all, it’s time for the government that stands with its people.”
As Gibson ended his speech, several members of the audience could be heard shouting, “Mel for governor.”
