His wife and daughter had been returning from Wichita, Kansas, where Brielle attended the National Development Camp for U.S. Figure Skating. It was a routine trip, one Andy and his son had eagerly awaited.

They were parked near the airport, ready to greet them as they had so many times before.

At first, everything seemed normal. Andy had been texting with Justyna and Brielle “right before they were supposed to land.” The flight tracker even confirmed their plane had arrived.

But then, the messages stopped. His iPhone texts, which were blue just moments before, turned green. That was the first sign something was terribly wrong.

Then came the sirens. Fire trucks sped past the airport. Andy’s stomach sank. He frantically reached out for information, only to receive the unthinkable news.

What came next was every parent’s worst fear—telling his young son.

“We had a really long cry. He let out this, like, ‘Nooo.’ It really hurt,” Andy said. “And that’s how we found out, right before anything was really official, but we already knew.”
