A hiker who set out on a solo search for four missing friends in Riverside County’s mountain region was killed after falling from a steep rock face, authorities said. The four hikers he was attempting to locate were later found alive by sheriff’s deputies, as reported by The New York Post.
The incident unfolded Saturday night in the rural Anza area of Riverside County, near State Route 74, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they received a report at approximately 8:26 p.m. of four hikers who were lost in the mountainous terrain.

While deputies began organizing a response, a fifth hiker — a member of the same group — launched his own search effort. At some point during that attempt, the hiker fell from a rock face estimated to be about 150 feet high.
The man, who has not been publicly identified, was later found dead at the base of the cliff in Anza, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Authorities did not immediately release further details about the circumstances of the fall or the exact terrain involved.
After the initial call reporting the missing hikers, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office deployed aviation assets and specialized mountain rescue teams to search the area.
Using a coordinated response that included aerial support, deputies were able to locate the four missing hikers later that night.
Officials said the condition of the four rescued hikers was not immediately known following their recovery.
No additional injuries were confirmed at the time of the announcement, and authorities did not specify whether medical treatment was required.
The Anza area, located in Riverside County’s mountainous interior, is known for rugged terrain and limited visibility after dark.
State Route 74, which winds through remote sections of the region, is frequently used by hikers and outdoor recreation enthusiasts but can pose challenges during emergencies due to steep cliffs and narrow access points.
Sheriff’s officials did not indicate how long the four hikers had been lost before the call came in or what led to them becoming separated from the rest of their group.
Investigators also did not say whether weather or trail conditions played a role in the fatal fall.
The sheriff’s office confirmed that mountain rescue operations were concluded after the four hikers were located, and the incident involving the deceased hiker is being reviewed. No foul play was suspected, and the death was described as accidental.
Search-and-rescue officials routinely advise hikers to remain with their group and avoid solo rescue attempts, particularly in unfamiliar or difficult terrain.
Authorities have emphasized the importance of contacting emergency services and waiting for trained responders rather than attempting independent searches in hazardous areas.
The investigation into the fatal fall remains ongoing. Additional details, including the identity of the deceased hiker, are expected to be released once the next of kin have been notified.
