The fires, which have swept through parts of Los Angeles County, have been attributed to inadequate preparation for fire season under California’s Democratic leadership.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Governor Gavin Newsom have faced criticism for their handling of fire prevention.
Mayor Bass previously reduced funding for fire departments by millions of dollars, while Governor Newsom and state legislators prioritized environmental projects, such as protecting fish, over building new reservoirs.
The resulting strain on water resources has reportedly left some hydrants dry during critical moments of firefighting efforts.
Mandy Moore’s GoFundMe campaign aims to raise funds for her brother-in-law, Griff, and his wife, Kit, who are expecting their first child.
In her Instagram post, Moore explained the family’s dire circumstances. “Yesterday, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law Griff & Kit lost their home and everything they own in the Eaton Fire,” she wrote. “With their first baby on the way in a matter of weeks, they need our support now more than ever. Griff is a touring musician and also lost his entire arsenal of drums/percussion he uses to make a living. It’s all so much.”
At the time of this publication, the GoFundMe has surpassed $200,000 in donations.
Despite the campaign’s success, Moore received criticism online, with some questioning why a multi-millionaire actress was asking the public for financial support.
In response, Moore addressed her critics directly in an impassioned follow-up statement.
“And people questioning whether we’re helping out our own family or attributing some arbitrary amount of money google says someone has is NOT helpful or empathetic,” Moore wrote. “Of course we are. Our buddy Matt started this GoFundMe and I’m sharing because people have asked how they can help them. We just lost most of our life in a fire too. Kindly F OFF. No one is forcing you to do anything.”
The backlash highlights growing frustrations with public figures perceived as disconnected from the financial struggles of everyday Americans.
Critics of California’s leadership have also pointed to the state’s repeated failures to address fire prevention and emergency preparedness, which have left residents vulnerable to devastating losses year after year.
Moore’s GoFundMe campaign continues to gain traction, but her sharp response to critics has sparked a broader conversation about accountability—both for those in positions of wealth and influence and for California’s political leadership in handling wildfire prevention and disaster relief.
As Los Angeles County continues to battle these fires, many residents are left questioning whether the state’s policies and priorities have exacerbated the crisis, leaving families like Moore’s in need of emergency assistance.
