Safety culture has claimed another victim.
The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has disciplined a Ladder Co. 18 lieutenant, the New York Post reports, suspending him without pay and transferring him — after the company gave “some hot girls” a trip in the fire truck. Video of the incident captures young women waving to onlookers through the truck’s cab window, laughing, and taking selfies.
FDNY brass admitting in public they don’t know how firefighters act is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. https://t.co/Hjf1YkRHp9

“When I learn of behavior that is contrary to the rules and regulations of the Department, I act swiftly and decisively to address it,” Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker said to The New York Post. The FDNY is now investigating “frat house” behavior, according to a veteran department member who spoke to the outlet.
A FDNY chief characterized the moment as a “short ride with some hot girls” and a “stupid thing to do,” according to The New York Post.
Granted, the firetruck did drive down the street with its emergency lights active. And granted, the firefighters allegedly sounded the truck’s horn “at the request of the girls in the firetruck,” according to the New York Post.
You can either have guys who’ll run into burning buildings to save strangers or you can have guys who will never give hot girls a ride on the truck. You cannot have both. https://t.co/tzBoRBE0VK

“We allow people to come on the rigs,” a high-ranking FDNY chief told the Post. “We put kids in the rigs all the time for fire safety education and public relations. But as soon as the rig starts to move, that’s a different story.”
Perhaps a slap on the wrist is warranted. A suspension without pay and transfer seems excessive.
Does the city of New York not owe its heroic first responders a debt of gratitude? Is privileging some “hot girls” — perhaps in violation of department rules — not a small step towards repaying that debt in full? The job of a firefighter selects those who want to run into burning buildings. It should be unsurprising that the same sort of man might want to impress some young women with that fact.
Besides, many a great romance has (probably) been sparked by such ventures. I am forced to conclude that New York City holds not just firefighters in low esteem, but romance, too.
