The House Oversight Committee is expected to hold a hearing with Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser on rising crime in the nation’s capital.

Committee Chairman James Comer announced the committee will hold a hearing with D.C. officials, including Bowser, to explore legislative options aimed at better protecting Americans in the nation’s capital. (RELATED: Trump Calls For DC Homeless To Be Moved ‘FAR From The Capital’)

“Protecting all Americans and tackling crime are core conservative policy priorities, and today’s actions by the Trump Administration mark another promise kept,” he said.

“Alongside President Trump, the House Oversight Committee is also advancing legislative solutions to protect Americans in their capital city and plans to hold a hearing with the District Attorney General Brian Schwalb, D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson, and Mayor Muriel Bowser this September,” his statement continued.

Comer further expressed support for President Donald Trump’s efforts to address rising crime in Washington, D.C., following the president’s decision to activate the D.C. National Guard and place the Metropolitan Police Department under federal control.

A committee spokesman confirmed to the Daily Caller that Trump notified the Committee he will be taking over D.C. for more than 48 hours.

This action, taken under the authority of the Home Rule Act — which allows the federalization of D.C. police for up to 30 days — was intended to strengthen local law enforcement and restore public safety in the District.

“President Trump is rightly using executive power to take bold and necessary action to crack down on crime and restore law and order in Washington, D.C. For years, the D.C. Council’s radical, soft-on-crime agenda has emboldened criminals and put public safety at risk in our nation’s capital,” Comer stated. The committee holds jurisdiction over all municipal affairs other than appropriations in the district.

House Joint Resolution 26, which became law in 2023, was passed to block the D.C. Council’s Revised Criminal Code Act of 2022.

Meanwhile, House Joint Resolution 42, which sought to overturn D.C.’s anti-police legislation, also passed through Congress but was ultimately vetoed by Biden.

The D.C. Council ultimately rolled back many of the anti-police law’s provisions.

Comer previously praised the House on June 10 for passing the Protecting Our Nation’s Capital Emergency Act, which reinstates due process rights for D.C. police officers. (RELATED: Congress Took Over DC In The 90s — And It Worked)

Calling it a key step in formally enacting Trump’s Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful executive order.
