Republican Florida Rep. Cory Mills narrowly avoided a formal rebuke by his colleagues on Wednesday evening after the vast majority of House Republicans voted to scuttle the measure.

Mills successfully evaded the censure resolution offered by Republican South Carolina Rep. Nancy Mace that would have stripped him of his committee assignments. Nearly all GOP lawmakers and half of Democrats voted to table the measure and refer Mills to the House Ethics Committee in a vote that exposed Republican infighting. Mace stood at the podium while her censure resolution was read and stared directly at Mills, who sat just a few seats away from her.

Just seven Republicans voted with Mace to advance her measure censuring Mills.

The GOP lawmakers include Reps. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Lauren Boebert of Colorado, Tim Burchett of Tennessee, Joe Wilson of South Carolina, Kat Cammack of Florida and Hariett Hageman of Wyoming.

Mace, who has amped up her criticism of Mills in recent months, forced a vote on her resolution that she introduced earlier on Wednesday, citing myriad ethical allegations against her Republican colleague. The resolution would remove Mills from the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs committees.

Mace’s resolution draws upon reporting from NOTUS that disputed Mills’ version of events that led him to be recommended for a Bronze Star. The measure also highlights a December 2024 Office of Congressional Ethics report that found that Mills may have run afoul of House rules by potentially holding onto federal contracts while in office. Mills previously worked as a defense contractor before entering Congress in 2023.

The failed censure effort comes after the House Ethics Committee announced the creation of a new subcommittee Wednesday to investigate an array of allegations against Mills involving sexual misconduct and financial impropriety. Mills has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

Mace slammed the ethics panel deciding to announce a new investigation into Mills just hours before the vote on her censure resolution.

“This is a naked attempt to kill my resolution to censure Rep. Cory Mills,” Mace wrote on X. “Common sense tells us we don’t need an investigative subcommittee to decide if Cory Mills, who a Court found to be an immediate and present danger of committing dating violence against a woman, should serve on committees related to national security,” Mace wrote on X.

The South Carolina Republican was referring to a Florida judge barring Mills in October from having any contact with his ex-girlfriend, Lindsey Langston, who is the reigning Miss United States. Langston has accused Mills of threatening to publish sexually explicit photos and videos of her following the end of their relationship in February.

Mills has not been charged in connection with the revenge porn allegations.

House Democrats have previously threatened to advance a censure measure against Mills on several occasions in an attempt to ward off GOP-led efforts to formally rebuke Democrats. Democratic New York Rep. Yvette Clarke withdrew her resolution to censure Mills Tuesday night following Republicans failing to secure enough votes to reprimand Democratic delegate Stacey Plaskett over her ties to the late convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein.
