How Did the Swastika Flag Wind Up in Rep. Taylor’s Office?

Dave Taylor is a Republican who serves as the representative for Ohio’s 2nd congressional district. He has a Washington, DC office in the Cannon House Office Building. This week, someone who had a Zoom call with a staffer in Taylor’s office noticed something strange in the background. It was a US flag that has been altered so that the red and white stripes formed a swastika. They apparently sent the screenshot to a site that covers Ohio politics.

A friend in DC had a Zoom call with Congressman Dave Taylor’s office today…

From there the story quickly jumped to Politico which confirmed the flag was real and not a photoshop. The Capitol Police were called to investigate by the congressman.

U.S. Capitol Police were called about an American flag altered to include a swastika and displayed inside the office of Rep. Dave Taylor (R-Ohio), his spokesperson said…

“I am aware of an image that appears to depict a vile and deeply inappropriate symbol near an employee in my office,” Taylor said in a statement. “The content of that image does not reflect the values or standards of this office, my staff, or myself, and I condemn it in the strongest terms.”

Taylor said he “immediately” directed a thorough investigation alongside the Capitol Police, adding, “No further comment will be provided until it has been completed.”

Rep. Swalwell helped spread the story.

Speaker Johnson was asked about it.

Rep. Jeffries was quick to capitalize on it.

All that to say, this was very quickly a big deal. It wasn’t some side story that went unnoticed. So what happened here? Today we’re getting some indications that flags like this were being passed out to GOP offices earlier this year. Apparently, the swatsika was hard to spot with the naked eye.

The flag was spotted Wednesday in a photo of a staffer’s desk in Taylor’s office, prompting a vandalism investigation by U.S. Capitol Police.

Sources, including those investigating the issue, said the American flag had a swastika embedded into the ink or weaving, making it hard to see with the naked eye…

One source described the alleged manufacturing tactic as an “optical illusion.” Another said the swastika was “easy to miss.”

The flag was seemingly one of many dropped off at dozens of congressional offices early in the year by an undetermined group.

There are some conflicting reports. One staffer said they spotted a similar flag and tossed it out but other sources said the swastika on the flag in Taylor’s office wasn’t obvious until it was on camera.

I haven’t seen it so I don’t know if there’s an optical illusion involved but obviously using a screenshot from a Zoom video doesn’t settle the matter either.

Rep. Taylor posted an update yesterday saying the source of the flags hasn’t been identified but that they were passed out to “numerous Republican offices” as part of what he calls a “ruse.” He says none of his employees knowingly displayed this.

New details have emerged from a coordinated investigation into the vile symbol that appeared in my office. Numerous Republican offices have confirmed that they were targeted by an unidentified group or individual who distributed American flags bearing a similar symbol, which were initially indistinguishable from an ordinary American flag to the naked eye. My office was among those that were subjected to this ruse. After a full-scale internal investigation, I am confident that no employee of this office would knowingly display such a despicable image, and the flag in question was taken down immediately upon the discovery of the obscured symbol it bore. As I’ve said previously, I unequivocally condemn hate in any form and continue to collaborate with Capitol Police and the Committee on House Administration to uncover additional details in this investigation.

But who is behind it? That’s still under investigation.
