The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has launched a nationwide hotline for reporting criminal activity in federally funded housing communities, expanding ongoing federal efforts to address violence, fraud, and unlawful residency in properties supported by taxpayer dollars.
On Monday, November 24, HUD Secretary Scott Turner announced the creation of a national crime tip hotline intended to bolster public safety within HUD-funded developments.
The initiative is aimed at addressing criminal conduct including gang activity, drug trafficking, human trafficking, and the presence of ineligible tenants such as sex offenders and individuals residing in the United States unlawfully.
The new hotline, 1-800-347-3735, gives residents a direct means to report threats and illegal behavior as they occur.
HUD officials noted that online reports will also be accepted through HUDOIG.gov/hotline.
Officials said initial enforcement will be concentrated in Memphis and Washington, DC, where federal task forces have already reported thousands of arrests and significant weapons seizures under initiatives ordered by President Donald Trump earlier this year.
The hotline rollout comes after a series of housing policy reforms implemented throughout 2025 under Turner’s direction.

These reforms are intended to ensure that American citizens receive priority in federally supported housing programs.
Among the changes is a Memorandum of Understanding between HUD and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem titled “American Housing Programs for American Citizens,” which blocks the use of housing funds for illegal aliens.
HUD has also updated Federal Housing Administration loan requirements so that applicants must show proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status, removing access for non-permanent residents, including individuals with DACA status.
The reforms are supported by Trump’s Executive Order “Ending Taxpayer Subsidization of Open Borders,” which directs more than 3,000 Public Housing Authorities to submit verified information about tenants’ legal status.
HUD has said authorities that fail to comply may face funding reviews and potential enforcement measures.
The department has clarified that programs such as Section 8 vouchers and FHA-backed mortgages are intended only for U.S. citizens and eligible lawful residents.
The hotline also aligns with the Memphis Safe Task Force, launched by President Trump in September.

Since October, the task force has arrested 3,151 violent fugitives, including 12 individuals wanted on homicide charges, and seized more than 500 illegal firearms.
The task force is made up of 13 agencies, including the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service, and has focused on high-crime areas, removing gang members and sex offenders from housing developments participating in federal programs.
In one 72-hour period this fall, authorities arrested 93 illegal alien criminals, including a gang-affiliated terrorist and a suspect wanted for child rape.
Federal agencies and local officials have described the enforcement actions as a significant shift in public safety efforts in a city long known for elevated violent crime rates.
HUD officials said the new hotline will add another tool to ongoing federal operations intended to improve safety and ensure that federally funded housing resources are used in accordance with federal law.
