Liberal outlet HuffPost is drawing backlash after publishing a headline that labeled Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson as a purveyor of “homophobic hate,” less than 24 hours after his passing was announced, as reported by Breitbart.
The headline, published Monday morning, read: “Phil Robertson, ‘Duck Dynasty’ Star Who Spread Homophobic Hate, Dead At 79.”
The article followed with a lede accusing Robertson of having “stirred controversy with his anti-gay rhetoric,” referencing comments he made in prior interviews where he described homosexual behavior as sinful, consistent with his Christian beliefs.
Phil Robertson has passed into glory. He was 79.
Phil will be remembered for his bold faith in Jesus Christ and his willingness to speak truth to a dying world.

Robertson’s death was confirmed Sunday by his family. His daughter-in-law, Korie Robertson, wrote on Facebook, “We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord.”

His passing came after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, which his son Jase Robertson had publicly discussed last month.
A central figure on A&E’s long-running Duck Dynasty series, which debuted in 2012, Robertson became known for more than just his family’s duck call business. He emerged as a prominent conservative voice, often vocal about his Christian values and support for traditional marriage.
The HuffPost article also took aim at Robertson’s political activity, pointing out his endorsement of President Donald Trump during both the 2020 and 2024 elections, as well as his support for Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.
The outlet specifically mentioned his appearance at a Cruz campaign rally, where Robertson criticized the redefinition of marriage, saying, “They’re redefining marriage and telling us that marriage is not between a man and a woman.”
While millions of Americans saw Robertson as a symbol of faith, family, and traditional values, HuffPost framed his expressions of those beliefs as hateful, prompting criticism from conservatives who argue that the outlet showed blatant disrespect by targeting the late patriarch so soon after his death.
As tributes continue to pour in from fans and public figures, HuffPost’s coverage has become a focal point of controversy. Many observers noted the timing of the story, published just one day after the family publicly shared news of Robertson’s passing.
Phil Robertson is survived by his wife Kay, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family has asked for prayers and privacy during this time.
