Hunter Biden Linked to Romanian Proposal Selling Embassy Land to a Chinese Company

Hunter Biden was connected to a proposal that sought to sell land surrounding the U.S. Embassy in Romania to a business group that included a Chinese energy company, according to a report by The New York Times, as reported by The New York Post.

The plan emerged while Biden was working to assist Romanian real estate developer Gabriel Popoviciu, who was facing criminal charges for corruption.

Hunter Biden’s involvement began in 2015 when he agreed to represent Popoviciu as legal counsel during efforts to appeal the case.

The proposal, which came after President Joe Biden left office as vice president, appeared designed to encourage Romanian authorities to reconsider Popoviciu’s prosecution by creating a joint venture that would benefit the state financially.

The structure of the proposed deal involved Popoviciu transferring a substantial share of his land holdings around the U.S. Embassy in Bucharest to CEFC China Energy, a Chinese conglomerate that had prior financial dealings with Hunter Biden.

Under one version of the plan, CEFC would hold up to 47.5% of the joint venture, with the Romanian government potentially collecting revenue from the new arrangement.

According to the Times, the proposal was framed as a development opportunity that could have generated economic benefits for the government, though it also served as an effort to mitigate Popoviciu’s legal exposure.

Romanian prosecutors at the time were pursuing a case alleging that Popoviciu had obtained public land for below-market value through improper means.

Hunter Biden confirmed his involvement in several capacities, both as Popoviciu’s attorney and as a participant in the potential purchasing group.

Text messages cited by the report revealed that Biden viewed his participation as a personal risk. “I’m the only one putting an entire family legacy on the line,” he wrote in a message to associates.

The plan ultimately collapsed in 2017 after internal disputes among those involved. That same year, Popoviciu was convicted of real estate fraud and sentenced to seven years in prison.

CEFC China Energy, the company at the center of multiple international business ventures involving Hunter Biden, has since been linked to various foreign influence and corruption cases. Its chairman, Ye Jianming, was detained by Chinese authorities in 2018 and has not been publicly seen since.

The Romanian case adds another layer to scrutiny surrounding Hunter Biden’s overseas business relationships, which have involved companies and executives from China, Ukraine, and other countries during and after his father’s vice presidency.
