President-elect Donald Trump plans to revoke the security clearances of 51 intelligence officials who signed a letter suggesting that reporting on Hunter Biden’s laptop before the 2020 election had “the classic earmarks” of Russian disinformation.

This move is expected to be part of a series of executive actions on Trump’s first day back in office, according to a report from Fox News citing a senior administration official.
The officials in question, dubbed the “Spies Who Lie,” had signed a public letter in October 2020 that cast doubt on the legitimacy of emails reportedly obtained from Hunter Biden’s laptop.

Despite their claims, federal authorities later verified the authenticity of the laptop and its contents.
The Hunter Biden laptop first came to public attention during the 2020 presidential election.
Reporting by The New York Post revealed emails and other data allegedly retrieved from the device, which had been left at a Delaware computer repair shop.
The emails suggested Hunter Biden had facilitated introductions between his father, then-Vice President Joe Biden, and a top executive at Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company where Hunter served on the board.
The laptop also contained material related to allegations of foreign influence-peddling and personal issues, including drug use.
A copy of the laptop’s hard drive was provided to The New York Post, while the FBI took possession of the original device in 2019.
Shortly after The New York Post began publishing its reports, a group of 51 former intelligence officials, including high-ranking figures from the CIA and other agencies, signed a letter claiming the emails bore similarities to a Russian disinformation campaign.
However, the officials did not present evidence to substantiate their claims.
Federal authorities, including the FBI, later confirmed the laptop was authentic.
In a 2023 congressional deposition, an IRS whistleblower revealed that the FBI had verified the laptop’s legitimacy as early as November 2019.
The laptop also played a role in federal investigations, including Hunter Biden’s 2023 gun trial.
Despite the verification of the laptop, the intelligence officials who signed the 2020 letter largely stood by their claims when contacted by Fox News last year.

Mark S. Zaid, a lawyer representing seven of the letter’s signatories, defended the document, stating that it was intended as a warning about ongoing foreign interference efforts.
“It served as nothing more than a warning letter of what we have known for decades: certain foreign governments — including Russia — continue to try and actively interfere in our domestic affairs and our guard must remain vigilant,” Zaid said, adding, “Every patriotic American should have signed that letter.”
In addition to revoking the clearances of these intelligence officials, Trump is reportedly preparing to sign over 200 executive orders upon his return to the presidency.

Trump’s decision to target the intelligence officials is part of his broader agenda to address actions taken against him during and after the 2020 election.
His administration has signaled that accountability for what they view as political interference by government agencies will be a key focus of his second term.
As Trump prepares to take office, the debate over the Hunter Biden laptop continues to spark controversy, underscoring its significance in recent political and legal developments.
