A Hispanic Florida woman expressed her outrage Wednesday at Democrats for “fighting” for the return of alleged MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia instead of for law-abiding Americans.
Several Democrats have made journeys to El Salvador to demand Abrego Garcia’s return to the United States despite the allegations against him, which include abusing his wife. The woman called into journalist Mark Halperin’s “The Morning Meeting” to voice her anger, saying the effort won’t win over Hispanic voters. “I am Hispanic, but I am a legal citizen and I am disgusted and I am so angry with liberals going out of the country for this guy,” the caller said. “And I don’t understand — I mean, we have people here in prison. Why aren’t they fighting for some here? I don’t understand what they’re trying to say to the Hispanic community.”
“Like, are they trying to pick votes? Because that’s not doing it. Especially for people like us that — we obey the law,” she continued. “I mean, I don’t understand. Why are they doing this? It’s not doing anything. It’s just making us more angry. That’s all.”
President Donald Trump’s administration acknowledged it had made an “administrative error” when deporting Abrego Garcia. However, Halperin himself said on “2WAY Tonight” Monday that he “will never understand” Democrats choosing to fight for the alleged MS-13 member.
“This guy is not the poster child for due process. Not just because he came to the country illegally and not just because he seems to have done some bad things, but the history of his case is … there’s stuff that cuts both ways,” Halperin said. “So if they want to have a big due process fight, I just can’t imagine why they’d want it to be around this guy.”
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed to the Daily Caller Thursday that Abrego Garcia was stopped in Tennessee in December 2022 on suspicion of human trafficking after being found to be transporting eight passengers across the U.S., as previously reported by the Tennessee Star. He allegedly did not possess a valid driver’s license, but was released at the request of the FBI.
DHS also published a domestic violence restraining order previously sought by the alleged MS-13 member’s wife in 2021. Despite presently pushing for his return, his wife once claimed that Abrego Garcia repeatedly became aggressive and hurt her, swearing in court records that he once “punched, scratched me on my left eye, leaving me bleeding,” among other alleged physical abuse.
Trump received 43% of Hispanic votes during the 2024 election, according to The Associated Press. He particularly made substantial gains with Hispanic men, securing a majority of their votes nationwide.
