Former first lady Melania Trump defended her pro-choice stance on abortion in an interview released Friday on the “Some Future Day” podcast.
Melania Trump spoke out about being the first Republican first lady to come out as pro-choice, emphasizing to podcast host Marc Beckman her belief in women’s rights and individual freedoms.
“I feel and I believe that individual freedom is the most important aspect of life. You need to be in charge of your own body — nobody else but yourself,” Melania Trump said.
The former first lady cited her young adulthood as a reason for her stance. (RELATED: Billionaire Donor Fires Off 33-Reason Salvo On His ‘Losing Total Confidence’ In Biden-Harris, Dems)
“Why should somebody else tell me what to do?” she asked. “Any man? Any woman? This is me. I was born, I was put in this world and nobody should be in charge of me.”
Trump said, however, minors should have an adult involved in abortion decisions because they are “not developed the way that should be at that age.”
Melania Trump’s husband, 2024 Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, clarified his stance on abortion in March when he said, “You have to have exceptions,” for rape, incest and the endangerment of the life of the mother. He has repeatedly championed abortion as an issue to be resolved by the states following the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Former first lady Trump also highlighted her respect for others who are pro-life, reiterating, “I believe in individual freedom.”
The former first lady first revealed she is her pro-choice in her memoir, prompting discussions on whether her stance was a planned political move. She dismissed these claims in her interview, saying “the sisterhood” of women have not supported her stance.
“They’re calling that it’s a scam and it’s a lie,” Melania Trump said. “You know, it’s interesting, right? When politics get involved becomes interesting.”
“I got a lot of messages from women that [say], ‘Thank you for speaking out,’ but they were not those, as they call themselves, ‘feminists,’” she added.
