California Governor Gavin Newsom admitted Monday that the Democratic Party is facing serious internal confusion and has not reckoned with its sweeping losses in the 2024 election, as reported by The New York Post.
Speaking in an interview with The Hill, Newsom expressed uncertainty about the party’s direction and said there has been no meaningful effort to analyze what led to Republicans regaining control of the White House, Senate, and additional House seats.
“I don’t know what the party is. I’m still struggling with that.”

The comments come as Democrats continue to experience historically low approval ratings in Congress and lack a clear leader heading into the 2026 midterms.
Despite public dissatisfaction with the party’s performance in 2024, Newsom said there’s been no effort to assess what went wrong.
“We have not done a forensic of what just went wrong, period, full stop,” he stated. “I don’t think it, I know it.”

Newsom, who governs a state with a population larger than 21 others combined, said there has been no party-wide dialogue that includes California. “There’s not been a party discussion that I’m aware of that has included the state of California,” he said.

Newsom warned that Democrats are at risk of repeating their mistakes if they continue to ignore the need for introspection.
“We’re not even stress-testing what the hell just happened.”
While urging others in the party to reflect, Newsom avoided offering direct criticism of former Vice President Kamala Harris’s failed 2024 campaign.
Harris lost to President Donald Trump after entering the race late in the election cycle, following former President Joe Biden’s withdrawal in July 2024.
Asked about Harris’s shortcomings in the race, Newsom said, “I would have a difficult time answering that. Because I think I’d be unfair in answering that.”

He described Harris’s 107-day campaign as “remarkably effective” and praised her strengths without elaborating on areas where the campaign faltered.
Newsom was one of the Democratic Party’s most active surrogates during the 2024 election cycle, campaigning for both Biden and Harris across the country.
Harris, meanwhile, is reportedly eyeing the California governor’s race in 2026 and is expected to announce her decision by the end of summer.
As for Newsom’s own political future, he told comedian Bill Maher in a recent interview, “I’ve got no grand plans.”
