U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested an illegal immigrant who was employed as a police officer in the Chicago suburb of Hanover Park.

The arrest was part of the ongoing federal operation known as Operation Midway Blitz.

According to ICE, 35-year-old Radule Bojovic, a citizen of Montenegro, was taken into custody on October 15 after agents determined that he had overstayed a B-2 visitor visa and remained in the United States unlawfully.

.@GovPritzker doesn’t just allow illegal aliens to terrorize Illinois’s communities, he allows them to work as sworn police officers.

Records show Bojovic entered the country legally but was required to leave by March 31, 2015, and failed to do so.

Bojovic was serving as a police officer with the Hanover Park Police Department at the time of his arrest.

ICE officials confirmed that he presented his department-issued identification card to agents during the encounter, verifying his employment status.

Bojovic also informed authorities that he was authorized to carry a firearm while on duty but did not have a weapon on him at the time of arrest.

In a statement, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Chicago Field Office Director Sam Olson said the incident highlighted a growing concern about local jurisdictions disregarding federal immigration law. “Illegal aliens are prohibited from owning or possessing firearms — full stop,” Olson said.

“This is the second known instance in recent months of a local police department hiring an illegal alien and unlawfully issuing him a firearm while on duty in violation of federal law. It is alarming how local jurisdictions continue to disregard federal law to the detriment of their communities.”

ICE said Bojovic told agents he had joined the Hanover Park Police Department in January after completing training at a local police academy.

The agency did not specify whether Hanover Park officials had verified his immigration status before his hiring. The village of Hanover Park has not yet commented publicly on the arrest.

The case marks the second time in recent months that ICE has identified a foreign national working as a law enforcement officer in violation of immigration and firearms laws.

In July, ICE detained Jamaican national Jon-Luke Evans, who had been serving as a reserve officer with the Old Orchard Beach Police Department in Maine.

According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Evans came to the attention of authorities after attempting to purchase a firearm.

ICE officials said Evans lawfully entered the U.S. at Miami International Airport on September 24, 2023, but failed to leave when his visa expired one week later.

Following his detention, Evans agreed to voluntarily leave the country. ICE confirmed that Evans’ case also involved coordination with ATF investigators.

The federal agency launched Operation Midway Blitz earlier this year to identify and apprehend illegal aliens involved in crimes or violations of federal law within the Chicago metropolitan area.

ICE has described the initiative as a targeted enforcement effort aimed at enhancing community safety by locating individuals who have violated immigration law or engaged in public safety-related offenses.

The agency said investigations are continuing into how Bojovic was hired by the Hanover Park Police Department and whether any local officials were aware of his immigration status.

Federal law prohibits noncitizens who are unlawfully present in the United States from possessing firearms or serving in law enforcement roles.

Both recent cases — Bojovic in Illinois and Evans in Maine — have prompted federal officials to warn state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with immigration and firearms regulations when hiring or certifying officers.

Director Olson said ICE will continue to investigate similar cases under Operation Midway Blitz.

“We will not allow individuals who are in this country unlawfully to hold positions of public trust or to carry weapons under the authority of the law,” he said.
