Immigration and Customs Enforcement has rejected a claim by Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., that her son was stopped by federal agents and pressed to prove his U.S. citizenship while running an errand in Minnesota over the weekend, saying the incident never occurred and that the agency has no record of such an encounter, as reported by Fox News.
Omar told CBS’ Twin Cities affiliate that her son was subjected to what she described as a traffic stop-type interaction involving ICE personnel after stopping at a Target store on Saturday.
According to Omar, her son was ultimately released after producing a U.S. passport or passport card.
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons disputed the account on Tuesday, telling Fox News Digital that the agency has no documentation supporting Omar’s claim.
“ICE has absolutely zero record of its officers or agents pulling over Congresswoman Omar’s son,” Lyons said. “It speaks volumes that Congresswoman Omar is leveling this accusation with absolutely zero proof.”
Lyons described Omar’s comments to the local media outlet as a “ridiculous effort” to portray federal law enforcement in a negative light.
He also said such rhetoric has contributed to a sharp increase in threats against ICE personnel, citing a 1,150% rise in assaults and an 8,000% increase in death threats directed at the agency.

Omar, who has three children, said her son had gone out to run an errand when ICE allegedly made contact with him.
Her office pushed back strongly against ICE’s denial. Omar spokesperson Jacklyn Rogers told Fox News Digital that the congresswoman stands by her account.
“The congresswoman’s son and others were pulled over by ICE, racially profiled, and forced to prove their citizenship with a passport,” Rogers said.
“ICE has long operated as a rogue agency beyond reform. It’s no surprise that an agency known for disappearing people also can’t keep its records straight. ICE now claims it has records of all the stops, and our office would welcome the opportunity to review them.”

President Trump also recently announced Ilhan was under investigation for marrying her brother.

The dispute comes as Omar remains under heightened scrutiny amid a growing fraud scandal involving Minnesota’s Somali community and officials in St. Paul.
Omar recently responded to President Donald Trump, who referred to her as “garbage” during remarks tied to the fraud controversy.
Omar said it is “really disturbing and creepy to have the President of the United States be obsessed with you and those who share your ethnicity.”
She also addressed claims made by Trump at a rally near Swiftwater, Pennsylvania, last week that she had married her brother in order to obtain U.S. citizenship.
“Everybody knows I came to the United States at the age of 12; gained my citizenship at the age of 17,” Omar said.
Omar’s marital history has been the subject of public reporting. She first entered a religious marriage with Ahmed Abdisalan Hirsi in 2002, and the couple had two children before separating.
She later married British citizen Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009, separated in 2011, and reunited with Hirsi in 2012. After legally divorcing Elmi in 2017, Omar legally married Hirsi in 2018 before they later separated.
She is currently married to her longtime political consultant, Timothy Mynett.
In her interview with the CBS affiliate, Omar also criticized the Trump administration’s handling of the Minnesota fraud scandal, arguing that Somali communities are being unfairly targeted.
“Here in the United States, we don’t blame the crimes of an individual on a whole community. We are, as Minnesotans, also outraged by the fact that our tax dollars were defrauded,” Omar said.
She added that she supports investigations into whether Minnesota state funds may have ended up in the hands of the East African terror group Al-Shabab.
