Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson refused to answer a direct question Tuesday about whether he would support deporting an illegal alien who brutally beat and raped a woman — choosing instead to crack a joke during the press conference, as reported by The Western Journal.

The exchange occurred when reporter William Kelly questioned Johnson about a recent crime involving an illegal alien from Nicaragua who attacked a woman on the street, struck her in the head, and raped her.

A Nicaraguan migrant, high on cocaine, randomly targeted a woman on the Northwest Side, knocking her unconscious and raping her in an alley, prosecutors allege.

Kelly asked Johnson to answer a straightforward question: “If that had been your wife, Stacie, would you want ICE to deport that illegal alien? Yes or no?”

Instead of addressing the question, Johnson avoided it and mocked the reporter, saying Kelly’s YouTube views had dropped recently. Kelly responded by noting that his social media views were higher than the mayor’s before repeating the question.

“Answer the question as a man — not as a mayor — but as a man,” Kelly pressed. “Would you want ICE to deport that rapist?”

Johnson again declined to answer. “No? Okay, that’s the answer,” Kelly said as the mayor moved on without offering a response.

At today’s presser, I asked Mayor Johnson what real Chicagoans are asking: how can you call law enforcement “a sickness” while you hide behind 150 sworn CPD officers? And if you and your wife Stacey were ever… pic.twitter.com/SRETfruM7A

The confrontation followed a string of violent crimes in Chicago involving illegal aliens. Kelly noted that residents — particularly in minority neighborhoods — are angry that city leaders continue to protect noncitizens instead of prioritizing law-abiding citizens.

“The real Chicagoans that I talk to, that I communicate with — mostly black and brown, actually — tell me that you don’t seem to know the difference between illegal aliens and real Chicago citizens,” Kelly told Johnson.

“They feel that you are siding with the illegal aliens over them in their communities.”

Mayor Johnson has been a vocal opponent of federal immigration enforcement and has consistently resisted cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

His administration has faced criticism for opposing President Donald Trump’s initiatives aimed at removing violent offenders who entered the country illegally.

The question from Kelly came as Johnson faces growing backlash over Chicago’s handling of illegal immigration and rising violent crime. Federal data shows that thousands of migrants have been relocated to Chicago in the past two years, straining city resources and fueling political tension.

Johnson has also faced scrutiny for invoking racial arguments against federal intervention. He previously accused President Trump of being “racist” for deploying the National Guard to assist Chicago law enforcement during spikes in violent crime.

Meanwhile, Johnson is under a separate federal ethics review after acknowledging that he typically hires black staffers because he considers them “the most generous race.”

Tuesday’s press conference drew significant attention online, with video of the exchange circulating widely.

Critics say Johnson’s refusal to answer a direct question about a violent crime victim further highlights the divide between city leadership and Chicago residents, increasingly concerned about safety and accountability.
