Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., was sprayed with an unknown substance by a man who charged toward her while she was speaking at a town hall meeting Tuesday night in Minneapolis, according to law enforcement and statements from her office.
The incident occurred as Omar was hosting her first in-person town hall of the year in North Minneapolis. Minneapolis Police Department officials said the suspect was immediately subdued by security and officers on scene.
Omar was pulled away from the stage as the man was tackled and restrained. She appeared shaken but did not suffer visible injuries.

“We will continue. These f**king a**holes are not going to get away with this,” Omar shouted as the room reacted.
“It smells terrible,” a member of her entourage said, urging her to stop and be checked out.
Minneapolis police identified the suspect as Anthony James Kazmierczak, 55.
Authorities said he was charged with third-degree assault.

The disruption happened while Omar was addressing immigration policy. Moments before the incident, she had called for a transparent investigation into Immigration and Customs Enforcement and urged that the agency be abolished.
“We must abolish ICE for good,” Omar said, adding that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem must resign or “face impeachment.”
After briefly stepping away from the stage, Omar returned to the podium and told attendees she intended to continue speaking.
“We’re going to keep talking,” she said, insisting that she be allowed to continue for at least 10 minutes before being checked by medical personnel.
“We are Minnesota strong, and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us,” she added.
Omar later reiterated her calls for accountability within the Department of Homeland Security, referencing the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
“It is important for me to continue to lead my Democratic colleagues in demanding her resignation,” Omar said of Noem.
“If she does not resign we are going to introduce articles of impeachment,” she added.
In a statement released after the incident, Omar’s spokesperson described the encounter in more detail.
“During her town hall, an agitator tried to attack the Congresswoman by spraying an unknown substance with a syringe,” the spokesperson said.
“Security and the Minneapolis Police Department quickly apprehended the individual. He is now in custody. The Congresswoman is okay. She continued with her town hall because she doesn’t let bullies win,” the spokesperson added.
Representative Omar continued her town hall because of one of two options:
1. She does not have the self-preservation instincts accompanying being sprayed with a smelly substance, such as getting a doctor to check it out or even as simple as washing it off.
2. She staged it.…

Omar later addressed the incident in a post on X, saying she would not be deterred.
“I’m ok. I’m a survivor so this small agitator isn’t going to intimidate me from doing my work. I don’t let bullies win,” Omar wrote. “Grateful to my incredible constituents who rallied behind me. Minnesota strong.”

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey also responded publicly, condemning the attack.
“Violence and intimidation have no place in Minneapolis,” Frey wrote in a post on X.
“We can disagree without putting people at risk. I’m relieved Rep. @Ilhan Omar is okay and appreciate MPD for responding quickly. This kind of behavior will not be tolerated in our city.”

The United States Capitol Police confirmed that the incident is being treated as an assault on a member of Congress and said federal authorities are involved.
“A man is in custody after he decided to assault a Member of Congress – an unacceptable decision that will be met with swift justice,” a USCP statement said.
“We are grateful for the rapid response of onsite security and our local law enforcement partners. We are now working with our federal partners to see this man faces the most serious charges possible to deter this kind of violence in our society,” the statement added.

The investigation into the attack remains ongoing.
Why did Ilhan Omar continue her speech after getting sprayed by a foul smelling substance? Anybody else would immediately decontaminate, change clothes and get checked out at the hospital. Unless of course you knew it was nothing and it was staged.
