Federal authorities are calling a violent weekend incident in Boulder, Colorado, a “targeted terror attack” after a man allegedly set fire to a group of pro-Israel demonstrators.

The suspect, identified as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, now faces numerous felony charges, including first-degree murder and assault.

The attack occurred on Sunday on Pearl Street, near the Boulder County Courthouse, where a grassroots group called “Run for Their Lives” was holding a peaceful gathering.

The group organizes regular run and walk events to raise awareness and advocate for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. According to local authorities, the group had assembled as part of their ongoing efforts when the suspect allegedly approached and began his assault.

Eight people, ranging in age from 52 to 88, were injured in the attack. One victim remains in critical condition, while others were treated for burns and related injuries.

The Boulder Police Department reported that officers responded to 911 calls regarding a man with a weapon who appeared to be setting people on fire.

Authorities arrested Soliman, 45, at the scene. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and later booked into the Boulder County Jail. He remains in custody on a $10 million bond.

Charges against Soliman include first-degree murder – deliberation with intent, first-degree murder – extreme indifference, crimes against at-risk adults or the elderly, first-degree assault – non-family, first-degree assault – heat of passion, attempted commission of class one and class two felonies, and use of explosives or incendiary devices during the commission of a felony.

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed federal involvement in the case, stating:

“We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado. Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available.”

According to witness statements, Soliman was reportedly yelling “Free Palestine” during the incident. The location of the attack, in front of the county courthouse and during a regularly scheduled public event, has raised concerns about premeditation and ideological motivation.

FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said the incident is being investigated as “ideologically motivated violence,” based on evidence collected so far, including witness testimony.

Federal immigration records obtained by Fox News reveal that Soliman was in the United States illegally.

He arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on August 27, 2022, on a non-immigrant visa. He was permitted to stay until February 2, 2023, but remained in the country beyond that date.

Soliman filed an application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services on September 9, 2022. On March 29, 2023, he was granted work authorization, which remained valid through March 2024.

As of Monday, Boulder Police confirmed that no deaths have resulted from the attack. However, the seriousness of the charges and the nature of the incident have drawn national attention, particularly in light of Soliman’s immigration status and the ideological context of the assault.

Federal and local law enforcement continue to investigate, and further charges may be filed as more evidence is processed. The FBI has not yet released additional details regarding Soliman’s background or any possible connections to extremist groups.
