A Dominican national illegally residing in the United States was arrested after authorities discovered an AR-15 rifle and a massive stash of illegal drugs in his taxpayer-funded shelter in Massachusetts, as reported by the Independent Journal Review.

Leonardo Andujar Sanchez, 28, now faces multiple charges, including firearm possession, ammunition possession, high-capacity magazine possession, and heroin trafficking.

This latest arrest shines a harsh spotlight on Massachusetts’ state-funded shelters for migrants and homeless families, which critics argue have become havens for criminal activity.

On December 27, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the Quality Inn in Revere, Massachusetts—a hotel converted into an emergency shelter.

Inside Andujar’s room, police uncovered an AR-15, ammunition, and approximately five kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine. The drugs have a street value estimated at $750,000, according to Boston 25.

The Quality Inn is just one of 128 motels and hotels the state has repurposed since 2022 to house illegal migrants and other families. Massachusetts’ shelter system is projected to cost taxpayers over $1 billion in the 2025 fiscal year, according to a state commission report.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed Andujar’s illegal entry into the United States as a “gotaway” in 2024. ICE lodged an immigration detainer against Andujar with Revere police, ensuring he will be taken into federal custody upon release from state charges.

“Mr. Andujar has been accused of serious crimes, and ERO Boston takes its public safety mission very seriously,” stated Patricia Hyde, acting Field Office Director for ICE’s Boston office. Hyde commended the Revere Police Department for its cooperation, a rare move in a state often reluctant to assist federal immigration authorities.

Andujar’s case isn’t an isolated incident. In March, another migrant, Haitian national Cory Alvarez, was arrested at a Comfort Inn in Rockland, Massachusetts, for allegedly raping a disabled minor. Alvarez, who entered under the Biden-Harris administration’s CHNV mass-parole program, is now in ICE custody awaiting deportation.

These disturbing incidents raise questions about Massachusetts’ policies regarding illegal migrants. Over 355,000 illegal migrants reside in the state, with 50,000 arriving since 2021. Democrat Governor Maura Healey, who once welcomed migrants, has since encouraged them to leave Massachusetts and even offered plane tickets for relocation.
