A suspected member of the Venezuelan criminal gang Tren de Aragua is facing multiple federal charges after allegedly attempting to murder a federal law enforcement officer and injuring another during a traffic stop in Bellevue, Nebraska.

As Fox News reported, Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a 30-year-old Venezuelan national living in the United States illegally, has been charged with attempted murder of a federal officer and assault on a federal officer causing bodily injury, the U.S. Department of Justice announced.

Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco  entered the U.S. illegally in 2023—and Border Patrol removed him. In 2024—under the Biden administration—he re-entered the U.S. illegally and was released into the country with a notice to appear.

The incident occurred on June 18 when special agents with Homeland Security Investigations and the FBI attempted to arrest Hurtado-Cariaco on an active immigration-related warrant near his home in Sarpy County.

After initiating a traffic stop, agents directed Hurtado-Cariaco to exit his vehicle with his hands raised. As they attempted to place him in handcuffs, he allegedly resisted violently.

According to federal prosecutors, Hurtado-Cariaco dragged one agent to the ground, causing her to strike her head and elbow on the pavement.

The injured agent got back up and continued the effort to detain the suspect. As the struggle continued, Hurtado-Cariaco reportedly placed the injured agent in a chokehold.

“Hurtado-Cariaco appeared to choose to continue choking [the agent] rather than simply flee the scene,” the criminal complaint stated.

A second agent intervened and placed Hurtado-Cariaco in a chokehold, forcing him to release the injured officer. He then broke free and fled on foot. Authorities later located and arrested him at his nearby residence.

Attorney General Pam Bondi condemned the attack. “Deadly violence against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated by this Department of Justice,” she said. “We have charged this illegal alien with attempted murder.”

U.S. Attorney Lesley A. Woods also issued a statement praising the agents’ resilience.

“These federal agents maintained their professionalism while being met with potentially fatal violence. Despite sustaining injuries, the agents did not give up and made a successful arrest.”

Hurtado-Cariaco was previously removed from the U.S. in 2023 by Border Patrol agents after entering the country illegally. He re-entered the U.S. unlawfully in 2024, according to a Homeland Security spokesperson.

The injured agent was taken to a hospital for treatment following the attack. Hurtado-Cariaco remains in federal custody. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said, “The arrest and prosecution of this vicious Tren de Aragua gang member underscores our unwavering commitment to protecting our law enforcement officers in the line of duty.”
