The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, led by Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán (D-Calif.), has announced its opposition to President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed mass deportation initiative.
Barragán, chair of the caucus, argued on Friday that such a plan would negatively impact the U.S. economy.
Barragán’s remarks came as the Trump administration prepares to implement one of its signature immigration policies.

Trump, during his 2024 campaign, pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation effort in American history.
In a Saturday appearance on “Fox News Live,” Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Trump’s pick for “border czar,” responded sharply to Barragán’s statement.
“Game on,” Homan said, challenging the Congressional Hispanic Caucus’s stance. He later criticized Barragán directly, saying, “Shame on her.”
Homan defended ICE’s role, emphasizing that the agency enforces laws passed by Congress. “If she doesn’t support the laws that ICE is enforcing, she should resign from Congress,” Homan added.

President-elect Trump has signaled his readiness to use extraordinary measures to achieve his deportation goals.
In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump confirmed reports that his administration plans to declare a national emergency and use military assets to support the mass deportation effort.
Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton highlighted this potential strategy in a Truth Social post earlier this month, saying, “Reports are the incoming @RealDonaldTrump administration prepared to declare a national emergency and will use military assets to reverse the Biden invasion through a mass deportation program.”
Trump affirmed the statement, replying, “TRUE!!!”
A Fox News Poll conducted in October found that 67% of registered voters support a policy of deporting illegal immigrants to their home countries.
The poll reflects growing public concern over immigration policies and border security, issues that were central to Trump’s campaign platform.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus, composed entirely of Democratic lawmakers, has remained steadfast in its opposition to Trump’s immigration policies.
Barragán and other members argue that mass deportations could disrupt industries reliant on immigrant labor and harm the economy.
As Trump prepares to take office, his administration faces potential resistance from Congress and advocacy groups.
The mass deportation plan is likely to be a flashpoint in the broader debate over immigration policy and border security.
With public opinion appearing to favor stricter immigration enforcement, Trump’s administration is expected to move forward with its plans, setting the stage for significant political and legal battles.
