President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran appears willing to enter discussions over its nuclear program following a series of Israeli airstrikes that targeted key Iranian nuclear facilities and killed several senior officials.

“They’d like to talk, but they should have done that before I had 60 days, and they had 60 days, and on the 61st day, I said, we don’t have a deal,” Trump said at the beginning of a bilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney during the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Trump’s remarks came just days after Israel launched a major operation against Iran on Friday, striking multiple above-ground nuclear sites.

The air campaign followed disclosures from United Nations investigators that Tehran’s uranium enrichment program had progressed to near weapons-grade levels.

“They have to make a deal, and it’s painful for both parties, but I’d say Iran is not winning this war, and they usually talk, and they should talk immediately, before it’s too late,” Trump added.

Speaking to The New York Post on Friday, the president said he had anticipated the Israeli strikes and had given Iran a 60-day window to negotiate a deal aimed at dismantling their nuclear capabilities.

According to Trump, that deadline expired shortly before the Israeli action.

The 60-day timeline was reportedly initiated after Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on April 7.

Trump stated that Israel provided advance notice of the strikes. While the attacks reportedly caused significant damage to Iranian facilities, key sites like the Fordow uranium enrichment complex, which is located deep underground, remain intact.

Despite escalating tensions, Trump emphasized that diplomatic options remain available.

“There is still room for a deal,” he said, noting that not all of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure has been destroyed.

In an interview with ABC News on Sunday, the president was asked if the United States might become directly involved in the conflict.

“The US could get involved,” Trump said, without providing additional details.

During Monday’s G7 proceedings, a reporter asked Trump what specific red line would trigger U.S. intervention in the conflict.

Trump declined to respond directly to the question.

When asked separately about intelligence cooperation with Israel, Trump said, “We have always supported Israel… We have for a long time, slowly, and Israel is doing very well right now.”

In response to the Israeli strikes, Iran has launched missile attacks at Israeli territory, but the majority have been intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome defense system.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran is one of several key agenda items at the G7 summit, which includes leaders from Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, France, and Italy.

Aside from national security matters, President Trump said he planned to discuss trade and tariffs with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, with hopes of reaching a new agreement soon.

He is also scheduled to hold separate meetings on Monday with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Reuters reported that several G7 leaders have circulated a draft statement calling for de-escalation between Iran and Israel. As of Monday, President Trump had not signed the statement.

A White House official provided a statement to The New York Post reaffirming the administration’s stance.

“Under the strong leadership of President Trump, the United States is back to leading the effort to restore peace around the world. President Trump will continue to work towards ensuring Iran cannot obtain a nuclear weapon,” the official said.
