Is the Tide Finally Turning Against Candace Owens?

Charlie Kirk’s murder is one of the most shocking things to happen in politics since, well, since the attempt to murder President Trump in Butler, PA. People on the right were went from being stunned by what had happened to becoming really angry as some on the left celebrated Kirk’s death. It genuinely seemed to me like things couldn’t get any worse than knowing some small but still sizeable minority of Americans were wishing you were dead and really relishing and cherishing that thought.

But somehow it did get worse. Not because the left became more ugly but because a small but still sizeable minority of people on the right decided to turn Kirk’s death into a true crime drama/conspiracy theory. And where the shock of his murder and the left’s reaction had mostly pulled people on the right closer together, the conspiracy theory has torn it apart. One person in particular has led this charge: Candace Owens.

Over the past three months, Owens has hinted and then outright claimed that people at TPUSA were part of a conspiracy to murder Kirk. It’s a conspiracy that involves Egyptian airplanes and French/Israeli assassins and maybe the FBI and Secret Service. The story changes every day and there’s no evidence for any of it. The only person not involved is Tyler Robinson, the person in jail awaiting trial for Kirk’s murder. Owens routinely dismisses his arrest and the evidence supporting it as “fedslop.”

Last week, TPUSA finally started to fight back against this tidal wave of BS. They announced they would be responding to all of the false allegations on a livestream next Monday. This has already turned into a fiasco, unfortunately, as they made the mistake of inviting Owens to attend. Owens agreed and then backed out and has since returned to attacking the group.

Also this week, Erika Kirk, Charlie’s widow, has given multiple interviews responding to the conspiracies and asking people to stop. One of those interviews, with Bari Weiss, will air tomorrow but some snippets of it have already circulated.

Erika Kirk is now publicly telling Candace Owens to stop questioning Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

“Stop. That’s it. That’s all I have to say. Stop.”

But of course Candace won’t stop. She just keeps doubling down on her conspiracy theory. Some other commentators, mostly on the anti-Israel right have defended Owens, including Tucker Carlson who argued she was more credible than the FBI.

But today I’m finally starting to see what could be a turn in how this is going. It seems that, maybe, Owens act is finally starting to wear thin with people who have thus far been giving her a lot of latitude. For instance, Matt Walsh is asking Owens to stop attacking Erika Kirk.

That’s just a sample. Walsh devoted his entire show to this today and he makes clear that he believes all of the evidence points to Tyler Robinson as the shooter and no evidence backs up Candace Owens’ conspiracy theory. This is really a solid effort from Walsh.

Also today, Megyn Kelly has come out and directed some fire at the conspiracy theorists, especially making the point that law enforcement is not going to “run around” updating people on the evidence backing their investigation. “Some of us have been covering in depth legal cases and matters and have even tried cases and matters for years,” she said. She added, “The FBI does not run around updating its information after somebody gets indicted. It doesn’t…They’re trying to preserve the integrity of this case for when they get it in front of a jury.”

Kelly still hasn’t really taken aim at Candace Owens, but maybe this is coming. In any case, it feels like maybe we’re starting to finally turn a corner where Owens is on the back foot instead of the other way around. 

If I were TPUSA, I would be very careful not to screw up their livestream presentation on Monday. Frankly, they could just run Matt Walsh’s entire video above and call it done. But whatever they do, they need to be careful not to give Owens another window to shove her conspiracies through.
